I've removed the the solenoid to check that it is working ok. When I apply 12volts to the terminals the solenoid activates but the piston inside the valve only moves about 2-3mm. Doesn't seem enough movement to me Should the piston move more than this?
The faults seem easy to fix yourself except you have underestimated the cost of the exhaust. As you say drive it for a few days and see if it has other problems, not often you can do that. As long as the engine is strong should be decent enough buy, another £ 200 off the asking price would...

I'm going to put stickers on my car and up the value to £5k, sounds like a good investment to me. How about "Old Geezer Motor" or "Racy Clio" on a yellow background, should contrast well with the blue paint.
But not as hot as you describe. Haven't see a clio water pump yet but if they have a plastic impeller they are prone to damage or falling of the spindle. Looking at my pump it seems it will easily unbolt in 15 mins. My other thought is the cooling pipework is not connected to the right...
As the thermostat has been proved to open ok then then hot water would leave the engine block as the pressure builds in the waterways of the block and push hot water into the rad, ie the old theory that hot water rises or this case goes sideways (pardon the pun Danny)

I drive my Cup once or twice in a fortnight and the odd trackday, as I'm usually in a V. Vivaro during workdays. Always a joy to take out the Cup for a good thrashing on me own.
