There are some things that I wouldn't bother declaring (the boot lip spoiler on my car for example), but I'd definitely be declaring what you have done. They are hardly subtle mods, as you call them.
People seem to be having 'luck' with Admiral/Bell/Elephant. Add older drivers (parents for example) on as named drivers and that brings it down.
You probably should have researched this before buying the car though, tbh.

In preferences, go to advanced and see if the box next to "Copy files to iTunes media folder..." is ticked. I think I had some issues when starting as well. Can't remember if this sorted it. You will need to do it for both libraries.

This is how I manage multiple devices on the one Mac (it's the same process for a Windows machine). Works perfectly for me.
By the time the light illuminates the hole, you see it, process it and react to it, you'll have hit the hole and be 50ft down the road. They're a waste of time. Nothing more than something to show you don't own an entry level model.
That's my view anyway.
