As the guys have said, don't use oil to protect the diff, the box is weaker. What age is the gripper as they should be clunky at low speed / feel them / hear them if they are the early ones. Mine did it all the time before it was due it's service where the plates were changed to the new ones...

So, ASTs got fitted today and the car had its geo setup :) I've also packed for Anglesey and the power tour so looking forward to getting the Clio back on track and out and about. Been a while since it was used in anger. First take on the ASTs - stiff, and not well suited to country lanes...
