Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
Ok, dosent match, 063410 is the engine i have (if thats the engine number in the pic)
...Which leads me to believe that this engine was originally in the guys car, hes fooked it then bought a replacement, and sold this one...
Martin, can you search for the engine...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
if the bottom end is sound though, whats the point of spending twice as much rebuilding it? Im gona whip the caps off tommorow when i go and see it....
I know what you mean by saying it will be all new, and a perfect bottom end.....but its money at the end of the day...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
what do i need to measure regarding rings if i remove them (stripping block down later)....as the last thing i want to do is rebuild and have it burning oil because i didnt bother replacing the rings...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
well im looking at 300ish (if i rebuild, with new rings etc)
or 150ish for a bottom end thats for sale from a member on here (thats ok 30k)
hmmm, what to do!
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
No email reply yet.....will give it till this evening and then try and ring if not....only sent it last night...
Basically had a day of research today....been to the engine place that BRUN mentioned in this thread, very helpful, said the crank should be 99.99% fine being...
£50+Postage for the service ;)
I think mine was from an old 6 series, massive thing where the bonnet opens like a Mk1 clio....but quite a lot of the old ones have them apparently, not sure where Burp got his from.....local scrapyard hunting required!
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
Whats the chances of having to replace rings if the pistons are taken out? Or is it just a wait and see if they are knackered or not (can it be physically seen if there is damage or not?)
What sort of money am I looking at for new rings elsewhere on average if that is...
you can get a battery terminal off a BMW, old school one, look in burps or my thread....
Goes nicely in the bay and lets all the positives connect at one tidy point....
Ryan keeps mithering me to get another one from the scrapyard for him.....meh!
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
aye....i dont have big money for a full full rebuild after all this bad luck tbh.
If i wanted the block cleaning for swarf....means everything out as said, but if i take the pistons out it means new rings? new rings renault only arent they? got quoted 40odd +VAT per...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
cams are fine, nothing wrong with them by the looks of things....
swarf in oilways, hmmm...how would that be got rid of? and any way of checking pump?
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
not sure how much he wanted, but he wasnt sure if the crank was ovalled or not i dont think, which would mean it was useless.....was just for the crank anyway, id need to buy new bearings/shells also etc...
Pics of thrust bearing face (this is the side that was where the...

Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
so my options are....
1. Get crank polished, oversize bearings, let a machine shop sort them, hope its all ok...
2. Get a second hand good condition crank, a set of new standard bearings, let a machine shop sort them, and hope its all ok...
3. Get a new bottom end...
when i had some time searching about it on here the general feeling from quite a few people was the standard ones are prone to cracking if they are lightened
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
Right....all bearings and oil pump removed...
Crank scoring...
Crank removed...
The crank itself...
The main cap's for the crank...
Now the rods with the shells removed...
Maybe the culprit....thrust...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
yeah...got all the details, name, phone numbers, address, etc
the crank is now out, more scoring and i think the problem has been revealed....pics uploading now
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
ahhh right....well i took the shell/bearing out of the rod and it was the same as the rest, not scored/marked in any way, its just the internal (crank) side of the bearing....
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
the big ends are the ones going onto the block arent they, the rod bearing was spun, not the big end........
the bearings were still in place on the crank-to-block, just scored, they hadnt spun....
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
It was a piston bearing that had spun, i hadnt had any of the crank ones off at that point....
but anyway....took bearing number 2 + 3 off the crank....il let the pictures do the talking...
And number 3, no marks whatsoever?
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
Cylinder 1-2-3 (from flywheel end) are all perfect, not a mark on them, re-oiled both sides of the bearings, refitted....didnt check cylinder 4 yesterday as i thought if 3 are ok the other would probably be the same....
Took the cap off rod 4, to find the bearing had...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
Bottom end turns over with the head off (had no crank bolt in due to it snapping, so was using screwdriver on flywheel. It turned over multiple times, but was pretty stiff....
Cams turn fine on their own in situ, just once the belt is on and timed up, its very very very...
Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project
Had the piston rod caps off today, looked at both sides bearings, oiled them and refitted....dont know what im definately looking for, but dosent seem to be any weird marks or scoring....the insides of the bearing were still covered in oil already, as can be seen in the...
