Yup. I'm on my third. But I'm a fussy c*nt. I took two back because it had hairline cracks on it.
You'll get a new one if they can't fix it. They come with a one year warranty, and even after then, you can argue because they're Apple.
Ok. Download the new firmware from here and save it to your desktop.

You need the bottom tab. Select iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 7D11
Then go into iTunes and hold shift whilst you click 'Restore'
Then select the firmware file that you've downloaded from that...
There's no Apple Store in Chester to my knowledge mate.
It's very unlikely that the new 3.1.2 firmware has caused the issues. Try restoring it and downloading a new copy of it. Starting fresh.
Probably won't make a difference as it does sound like a hardware issue, if it's not fixed from...
Do you have a record of your music anywhere else?
You can use third party software to get around Apple's copyrights. ie transferring data from you iPod to iTunes. That's what I've done recently. Worked a treat even if it took over four hours since I have 51gb of music. LOL.
Hardware issue mate. Make a Genius Bar appointment. More than likely, they'll replace it for you there and then.
You can then return home and restore it from the backup you've made today.
