My mileage versus cost data over several thousand miles for both Tesco 99 and 95 shows that the extra cost is more than offset by the extra mpg. Engine unquestionably feels keener too, will tell for sure on the rolling road in a few weeks as the last run was on 95.

Not in my experience they don't. Good bite from cold, low dust, stand up to track abuse, reasonable price (if you're buying from G172). Will probably go for another set once my current ones are dead...and my mileage per annum is almost exactly 99% road and 1% track.

As Chip says...standard? My 172 Cup went from brand spanking new to 125k+ miles including a multitude of trackdays on one clutch. If you ride it or abuse it then upgrade but if not, I'd say upgrading is wholly unnecessary.

It won't. The weight savings are comparable if you look at a 5-door mk3 versus the 5-door mk4. The 200 is changing from a 3-door to 5-door though, so weight wise will be lighter from the technology, but heavier from the extra doors...so pretty much the same.

^^^ always be in the right gear at the right time. Also allows you to moderate your speed better using just the throttle as engine braking is more pronounced. Before I did the IAM I always used to go for the highest gear possible thinking it was the most economical...I was so far off the mark...

Surely some of the reasoning behind it is to do with efficiency? Can't modern DSG 'boxes accelerate quicker than the equivalent manual and also return better MPG? If so, eventually ALL cars are likely to come with them, just the same as how turbo engines are now replacing NA.

Could be the throttle body (or throttle pedal itself)...that's what my 172 Cup suffered from when it dropped into limp mode.
