Unfortunately ‘mint’ nowadays means a different thing thing than it used to. “It’s mint mate” is a statement that usually means avoid as it’s knackered.
The air con machine should be able to add some oil to the system.
I don’t do air con at work so don’t take this as gospel but looked up my 172 on our computer. Said it takes 130ml of oil, but then our air con machine can only add two digits so not sure how that works when replacing a...
My main POV on the engine is the reliability of them, especially for a French car. They are really solid engines.
There’s not many cars that would put up with years of kids beating on them with no doubt poor servicing and then be turned in to track cars & take a thrashing over n over on track.
Trust me, working in a garage watching much more modern cars get welded every week... 1*2’s don’t really rust unless they’ve seen action.
I think a lot of the rust issues are from damage. The shells are galvanised and it only take a tiny bit of damage to damage that coating to start the rust...
They were seriously under valued a few years ago IMO.
As a pure driving experience you couldn’t buy anything for similar money, I’ve no idea how they were ever so cheap. I guess the sheer amount of them.
Think it helps that Catchpole runs one, Harry has a trophy, bovvington (is it?) has one...
I’d give him £500 for it but it’d be as a beater until it dies.
It’s a tricky one for sure, as you rightly say the premium here would be for the paint but it’s screwed in that sense as it’d need a lot thrown at it. It’s just in no man’s land.
You either love or hate the colour but you sure...
Death trap might be a bit much haha but I know where you’re coming from. I have driven all sorts and I still get in my classic sti and think “this is proper fun motoring”
I guess it depends how you drive or should I say why. For me, driving is for enjoyment so I’d sooner drive the clio or my...
I couldn’t lose the cruise control as it’s my favourite of any car.
Bit of an annoying position compared to standard but being as they’re rocker action you can reach behind with your middle finger and operate them.
Has anyone made a plate up with aftermarket push buttons? Was...
That’s unlucky from what I’ve seen of these cars at that mileage as it sounds like it’s looked after too.
Mine is on 130k and my mate’s one only died at 175k when the aux belt went and took out the timing belt and he beat the thing off the limiter every day.
Seems a shame to ditch it after 14 years, I wouldn’t have the heart.
Be interested to know the mileage and how/why it died?
I personally wouldn’t go down the engine rebuild and upgrade route unless you’re going to track it, just get a complete engine from a circa 100k mile car.
Surely you go for the lightest wheel?
You’re going 15’s for that reason (or certainly a big part) so why compromise? just get the lightest ones. Any ‘nicer’ style will be negated by the sad roller skate look of the car:cry:
No car should be subjected to smaller wheels than factory size...
Have some replies gone missing? Read the one about the wheels sitting in the arches earlier and just looked, was going to quote it and say it does look odd... can’t see the reply above now
What ever way you look at it, the seats are a bonus surely? If they’re genuine recaros they’re worth something (a darn sight more than stock clio seats I’m sure)
So it doesn’t really matter if they’re not correct trend lines IMO, certainly wouldn’t stop me buying the car if it was a nice one.
Definitely a PITA doing the belts on these.
Wasn’t happy with my crank pulley’s rubber being perished so ordered a new one, that stopped job completion but should be there tomorrow so will get it finished Friday.
Some numpty had also destroyed the lower plastic timing cover (mind you it’s...
Big day for my old girl tomorrow as I’ll be doing...
Timing belt & dephaser (OE)
Water pump
Aux tensioner & belt (OE)
Oil (millers CFS) and filter
CV boot
And depending on how much time I’ve got... fitting my new steering wheel boss and my Momo wheel (for the track)
And also gonna remove the...
Sorry, missed that.
If mine lasts half the time my old snap on nicad impacts have I’ll eat my hat. But I’ve zero confidence in the new snap on impacts based on what the bloke at work has gone through so was a no brainier to start swapping based purely on the Milwaukee warranty.
We seemingly...
