1080p and 1080i are the same resolution and to all intents and purposes are the same its all down to marketing really you want the setting thats the best match for your screens native resolution no matter what it is

1080i is the same resolution as 1080p no down scaling is done only set it to 1080p/i if you screen has a resolution of 1920x1080 if its 1366x766 choose 720p if its 1024x768 choose 720p (unless the ps3 allows you to set that resolution)

end of the day they are never all going to be shooting the exact same bit of glass so 100% comparisons cant really be made
