If you leave the boot open on the megane it will refuse to start, displays boot open on the dash. Have you tried getting someone to hold down the latch pin or similar? Not sure of the golf's setup...

If you're planning on 3 to 4 years I would punt it on personally. If you did the belts now they would be close to being needed again when you started driving it! I'd sell it and save the money - you could buy a nice mk3 in 4 years.

Out of curiosity if it's £6000 a year now to insure it, how long is it going to be before you can actually use it?

The wilwoods were immense on the one I drove and they fit under 15's

16's have always looked to big for a mk1 though. I'd be selling the brakes off an fitting some that will fit under 15's -
