Dont think you can , well not with in OSX as its all down to air circulation, heat distribution etc etc. I think there is some 3rd party software that will let you close the lid and not put the Mac into a complete sleep.
I just close mine just enough before it shuts off.

TomTom is a very good app, I used it on a, should I say trial basis lol. I have purchased Co-Pilot on my iP4 and its decent sat nav aswell. I think I prefer TomTom but cant justify the difference. Bearing in mind I already paid for the TomTom Car Kit.
Maybe try an Apple HW test to see if there are any issues
Insert Disk 1 that came with your MBP, turn on your machine, hold and press "D" before the gray screen comes on. Keep holding it down and it will take you to the Apple Hardware test screen (blue).
