new rack on a 1.2 16V, i can do a recon one (i run one on my track car, its spot on) is about £130 from memory (don't quote me on that though, i might be off a bit) only takes about an hour to fit too, easy on the 1.2 16V's

i can send you a refurbed one for £150+vat (exchange) 2year warranty too (a new one from renault is £230+vat IIRC and only has a 12month warranty!)
car had 17's on to be fair and i was driving on s**t roads for a bit, but even still these were hard! i sent the punter off and told him to come back after 1000miles, see if they bed in a bit, then i'll have a play with the setup
its impossible for it to fail completley, regular oil changes = happy engines and dephasers :) (ie every 6K IMO, oil is cheap enough, dephasers aren't!)
try an oil change and engine flush/top end treatment first, that should shut it up
renault birmingham told one of my punters his front brakes were 70% worn when they were less than 24hours old! (brown bear on here)
i was seriously shocked by that one!
