Someone has used some strong cleaner on it. I know this because I did the same on a customers car. I found that isopropyl Alcohol more or less sorted it out but the only 100% way to sort it is to replace it.

Getting it done via the ECU is fine. They all come on and go out again like they should. I get mine done like that, I'm not a fan of bodging things up with resistors.

Take it to a dealer and get them to do it then. Will be dearer than a specialist though.
