The purpose of oil breathers/catch cans is to remove oil fumes from the inlet which can get in the mixture and increase the risk of det at WOT.
TBH they're probably only worth fitting on a highly tuned engine.
I brought a 172 as I wanted all the toys and AC plus the interiors in the cup models do seem to be a bit low rent.
Performance wise there's only 10bhp in it but obviously the cup is lighter so will be a tad more nimble.
Trophy version is the pinnacle of all hot hatches apparently including...
Agree mate
I never had the bottle to fully push my WRX on the road and as a result it did feel a bit dull.
Acceleration was absolutely ridiculous though once the turbo had spooled up....makes my 172 feel pedestrian in that department.
Problem was insurance (700pa), petrol costs (low 20s...
Agree with you to a certain extent about the Clio..it is a very able car out of the box both in a straight line and round the corners...I'm certainly impressed with it.
I'm going to mildly tune my car which means a decent sports cat, exhaust and filter and some uprated pads but that's as far...
Interesting stuff....I learn't a bit about mapping etc from my Subaru days but have no desire to do anything involving ecu changes etc with my Renault.....I think if it comes to me wanting something more full on a car change would be on the cards again:D
Like I said before...very rarely get involved in 'races' with people on public roads.....especially scrotes in saxos, novas and corsas.
I did use to like showing the odd chancer a chean pair of heels in my old car.....once the turbo had spooled up:D
I think the game is getting as close as possible to det for the power and backing off to allow some degree of safety margin (heat, bad fuel etc, etc).
Interesting thread....good to see what is possible although I won't be going down this route.
I've come from a WRX import with 270-280 bhp and even though the 172 is no where near as quick it's bloody easy to live with.
You get far less attention of scrotes, the insurance is good (if your over 30 like myself) and it'll happily get over 30mpg.
I would reccomend one....lots of fun too:D
Don't usually 'race' other cars on public roads prefer to leave boy racers with their 'race look' seatbelt pads and 'jap style' backboxes to roar/fart on past:D
As an ex scooby owner myself I'm all too aware of the problems that oil coated filters used to cause to the maf sensor hotwire.
I went for the green panel and am very happy with it......not sure if there is that much difference power wise but feels ever so slghtly crisper to drive.
