The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

So last week, after completing the swirl pot assembly the car went back on the rollers for a bit of fettling. It was booked to go on at 5.30pm last Thursday but this rather nice Paul Stevens retro Porsche was only just getting strapped down. So finally at 10pm they started on the Clio...

clio 172. yet another swirl pot.

Yes there’s a partial update on my thread which I’ll update this weekend. Car went on the rollers last night and gained an extra 8bhp with the new swirl pot assembly. Fueling was so improved and stable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Work continues on the fuel system. Received a new (2nd hand) tank and ordered some yellow baffle foam which I've cut into cubes. I've had some ALuminium cut ready to mount the swirlpot assembly in the wheel well and then some cut to cover it. All the hose fittings arrived in the week so I...

My new racecar project (Icemans old shell)

So the cat's out of the bag about my second driver then? That was my secret weapon! I'm really looking forward to it. I drove there on a trackday a couple of years ago in preparation for a race that season and then rolled the car at Donington which put paid to that! But loved it then and the...

I'll see you there. Are you testing on the Friday?

Thanks John. Makes all the work worth it! The engine has been built with PEC race pistons and rods to 12.5:1 compression so not too silly. Bottom end has been dynamically balanced and fitted with lightweight pulleys. The head is pretty standard but running Supertec valves and springs, non VVT...

    EPAS on 172 Cup

I beleive the brackets are used on another Renault engine. Maybe a megane or Laguna but I can't remember. There was a discussion about it last week on CSOC.

The columns do sometimes come up with the lower section as well. But if not they are sold separately on EBay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RENAULT-CLIO-EPS-ELECTRIC-POWER-STEERING-COLUMN-LOWER-UNIVERSAL-JOINT-UJ/311255857220?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

Video quickly put together of the race. Watching it back it just shows how much we need to work on setting up the suspension and spend some more time in the seat. In a straight line it was awesome!

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Just returned from a great weekend at Silverstone. We arrived early Friday morning for a day of testing and having never raced at Silverstone before we had a tall mountain to climb! The morning was spent both learning the track and getting used to the car and it's new suspension. The engine...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Completely forgot to update this last week and rather a lot has happened since! After finishing up at Mark Fish's with Gearbox back in and geometry and corner weighting sorted I next saw the car when I picked it up to take straight to Track n Road in Rainham for it's second stint on the rollers...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Fitting is straight forward enough although slightly different connections depending on whether you have a Cup master cylinder. And if you are having a bias valve check your pipe runs before installing it. I mounted mine beside the handbrake initially, only to find the line from the MC wouldn't...

Something a Bit Special For The Weekend?

Yes that was me! Geo and corner weighting done sufficiently for now. As everything on the suspension is new I just need a start point. Still a couple of electrical gremlins to sort. Sounds like your car is going to become part of the furniture there for a while. (I've been there before! Mark's...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Another step forward today, with the car now back together again geometry and corner-weighting were done today. Still have the EPAS gremlin to sort out and now as the fire extinguisher regs have changed this year I now have to install a whole new extinguisher system as nothing new is compatible...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Gearbox came off today and we replaced the main seal which Mark Fish confirmed was the culprit having been pushed in too far. New clutch arrives tomorrow and then it will go back together with a new release bearing and some fresh mineral oil ready for the final power runs. So we're still aiming...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Shouldn't be engine out but is definitely gearbox out which isn't too much hassle especially on a ramp.
  25. robzracing

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

That’s what I thought initially but according to Mark Fish that seal is one that shouldn’t be pushed in flush with the face otherwise the back edge pushes out of the back. So someone who perhaps isn’t familiar with an F4R engine could easily make this mistake. Either way hopefully they’ll take...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

This past week has been rather hectic in the workshop. After last week's success at startup I had a few days to try and iron out a few issues ready for the rolling road on Thursday. A good part of this time was spent throwing together the bodywork just so I could transport it to Essex around the...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

An overdue update as the last couple of days have been a bit nerve wracking getting ready for the first start. So yesterday was spent double checking everything as much as time would allow and then filling the cooling system, gearbox and finally the engine. Just cheap coolant as it will be...

The trials & tribulations of racing a Clio

Very nearly ready for it's first start now. Last week I finished all electrical connections and tested what I could. At the last minute I have decided to relocate the ECU slightly so I'm making a new housing for that. I really don't like it being in the engine bay but as it's always been there...
