Get a mk2 ph1 1.2 16v sport. Will deffo pick a very clean one up for less than £2k and they are really nice little cars.
I doubt you'll get a sensible insurance quote on anything over a 1.2 if you have no no claims.

The belts/pulleys have less work to do. The belts go around the steering pump, driving it making your steering lighter.
If you remove this, its one less thing the car has to do, making it more efficient.
Bear in mind it has to be removed properly. You don't just empty the fluid and hey...

Its out of warranty now. If the cambelt snaps, wave goodbye to £1500+ as you need a rebuilt engine. If the Aux belt goes, it will wrap around the cambelt and you'll be looking at £1500+ for an engine rebuild!
