If your PC'ing and applying strong waxes, then it should be done indoors or in total shade, otherwise it'll leave shadows all over the paint.
I'd just put in a new one. It doesn't have to be thick.
You could just try it using an old bit of electrical wire just to see if it cures it, if it does, buy a new remote lead. If it doesn't cure it, you've saved some dough! :)
If you can't move/hide the car overnight, then i suggest my old tactic. Remove two coils and/or the battery. Pain in the ass, but you know they aint starting it if they break in.

My mate who races pug 205s HAS to mount the harnesses on to a horizontal bar the same height as the shoulders of the driver, welded to to the cage in order for it to pass testing.
