I never did any of that, I used wire wool, a wire brush & a bit of emery paper. Cleaned the whole lot up then get on with the hammerite. Did them ages ago & they still look like new.

carlisleboy - what has your car had done to it ? No standard 172 puts out 172bhp as they aren't 172bhp to start off with, they are something like 160 bhp.
