I’d say either someone has put an older plate on it or it’s a 2002 car which was imported and allocated an age appropriate plate when brought into the UK and registered here.

I'd say don't do anything else unless it's free/very cheap. Enjoy it for what it is and save the money you would have spent on modding it for something better later on down the line.
