Glad to hear you've a temporary fix in place to get you going ;) Give Reanult a buzz or a breakers and see how much they'll sting ya for a new one. I'd have thought if it was your Hid's, a fuse for them would have popped aswell as the one on the battery :S

Agree with this 100%, you may get the odd good K Fit but they are few and far between :S

Different breathers on 172 compared to 182. What do you mean ? Is it a case of the 172's breather pipe being too short to reach the breather port on plenum ? If so couldn't you extend the breather pipe a bit to reach ? This wouldn't cause an issue would it ? Aint i just one less thing...

f**king hell !!! Does that include the Aux/Alternator Belt ? As i'm sure it needs changed at that mileage along with tensioner. And Camebelt aint till 72,000 miles or 4/5 years. Is there no other garages (Renault or not) around you that you could get prices from ? May still work out...

It is indeed an Alpine Cd Changer, i have fitted a Alpine Headunit in my 172 and was thinking about buying a lead to hook the Cd Changer up to it. I went against this, as the h/unit has a direct I Pod Link. ;) I Pod FTW, No Cds lying around.

Did the battery light flash before trying to jump start ? If so this is probably because the battery was fucked (dead) Thats "Jump Starting" if you use two leads (jump leads) this takes power from a good battery on another car to start yours. In thats case your starter motor will be fine...
