Contact the dealer and see if they'll make any goodwill gesture. Failing that I'd try and source a replacement engine and get it in there. I'd be gutted if it happened to me but it's not as severe a situation as it probably feels, it can be recovered.

Yep, tried a soft reset, tried the iPad, a different Lightning cable, updating to the very latest iOS. I'm going to buy a brand new cable from an Apple Store today so I can at least rule that out.
