Everything should be able to go in through the top.
In an ideal world you support the gearbox with a jack, remove the big nut, release the jack and the spindle should drop out.
Failing that you may need a hammer to knock the spindle out.
In my case I did replace the spindle as the seller...
Carbon canister open to air should throw an EML light if not plugged (I think) - maybe the solenoid is goosed hence it not venting and pressurising the tank.
No idea if that's true but it sounds plausible.

What exactly was changed on the gear linkage? and was it like-for-like? I have come across different versions that are not compatible. To answer your question no that amount of movement is not normal.
Regarding the engine knock when moved, it shouldn't do that either. To me it sounds clonky...
Exactly the same, and parking cost is astronomical 🤣 I tend to visit places around the gorge as its same-old there really.
Unrelated to Cheese Engorged but saw this on eBay the other day and it made me think of your build
I take it the car is still up in the air while you sort driveshafts? Sometimes you need a good run with load on the system to get it to settle.
I think it took mine a week as a bubble got caught in the heater matrix. It took a few good pulls to get it shifted and the AC would alternate from...
In a perfect world you would sack off the rubber pivot for a Yanoo Stiff Shift kit (which I also really rate) but unfortunately he passed away.
There seem to be aftermarket shifters with spherical bearings (that are not PMS) but no idea what they are like
Repair kit no: 7701464111. This will get you all of bits to sort the pivot/bush, lots on Ebay and Autodoc:
There is then a set of bushes at the end that attach to the linkage: 7700732903
But I would suggest upgrading these to brass if you are going to the effort of taking it all apart, I...
And we are back on the road, for my fellow ADHD friends in summary:
SKF tensioner kit fitted with 5pk belt
PAS mount replaced
PAS fluid flushed for Dexron III
Millers oil change w/ Purflex filter
New Sasic lower gearbox mount
Reseated HP PAS line
Raised front shocks 8mm
Rewired an audio stalk...
Stalk works fine (minus the roller at the back) but I had to desolder all of the microswitches. There is some multiplex wizardry, all the switches share lots of I/Os. Continuity diagram:
The dog's dinner... but as a V1 it works. I was really impatient and did it the dumb way.
+ = Speed Up
-...
Looks fiddly but should be doable, reinforce with a dab of black silicon (if it were me).
I thought about doing this but couldn't work out a way that didn't involve a load of loose wire behind the wheel 🤔
