So how exactly do you get more off them? I bought the car off auto trader for a start. How do I justify a higher value, when it is based on 'market value', i.e. what it costs to replace the car with one of a similar age and mileage. Modifications will not make any difference. I could take...
Thanks for replys, so chances are it's just about worth it. I was happy with the valuation to be honest, only £300 less than what I paid for it over a year ago. Was also higher than most similar ones on auto trader.
Just need to decide if I can be arsed to break it now!
Hi guys,
Unfortunately I have written off my 2004 Artic Blue Clio 182 :dapprove: Valued at £3700 by insurers, but repair bill of £8500, Cat C. Done by an independant place, it might just about be repairable, but I'd rather break it now.
Lost the back end and hit a fence sideways, so...
Simple answer is because it costs about £140 for a new one! HAve spent a lot on parts already. Since they don't seem to be critical when they go wrong, it doesn't seem like a big risk. Am getting quite handy at doing both belts now, so not too worried if I have to change it in 6 months / a year.
I'm definitely interested. Cars been in bits for the last month sorting a cambelt / valve replacement problem but got a few little updates on it and would like to see if it's made any difference.
Does depend on whether the car is running properly when I fire it up for the first time tomorrow...
Cheers Fred, very useful as ever.
I have the renault pulley locking tool (1509 / 1509-01), a Laser TDC pin and I made a camshaft alignment tool in the workshop! Used 5mm ground flat stock steel for the tabs and some flat machined 20mm thick aluminium to align them and keep it stiff. Having...
Just a quick query. I'm putting my engine back together after a cambelt problem and got round to doing the timing now. Having a few issues getting it to line up perfectly.
There is a bit of play in the dephaser pulley (182 on about 75k miles), but I'm not sure if it's too much and therefore...
Job is coming along well now.
I've finished sorting out the cylinder head, replacing valves etc and it's back on now. Gearbox has been off and put a new clutch in too. Slowly getting everything back together now.
Made myself a cam alignment tool (not the prettiest, but it should be...
I'm replacing the clutch on my 182 as I have it in pieces at the mo after cambelt went. Just spent the day replacing valves!
Anyway got the valeo clutch kit, which has the friction plate, spring plate and release bearing. Just wondering if there are any other seals / parts I need to replace...
Yeah I found Trechii on ebay, so that´s who I was planning to use. Think I´d rather put new ones in than 2nd hand, just to be on safe side, but thanks for the offer.
Anyone know if this valve spring compressor will do the job?
http://www.ccw-tools.com/product.asp?P_ID=3676&af=1792
Or anyone...
Couldn´t really do a vacuum test how I wanted in the end, so just sat the head at the right angle and poured solvent around the head of the valves to see if any leaked past. Surprisingly all the exhaust valves were ok, but two of the inlet ones leaked!
So I´ll probably do the full set!
Sorry I was meaning to ask if I´d get away with the pistons like that, was planning to change the exhaust valves, but you´ve basically answered that anyway, cheers!
Gonna do a vacuum test on it tomorrow (work in a composites place, so we have vacuum pumps, valves and bagging!) just to see if...
Another update, as I got the head off today. Looks like it´s just the exhaust valves that have contacted the pistons, the inlet valves seem ok.
They´ve rubbed the recesses in the pistons. The markings on the valves are not that bad, I think it´s been a fairly flat contact, so don´t think it´s...
I think the idler wheel has seen better days!
The other half has started to smash its way through the lower cambelt cover and has been chewing at the back of the auxiliary belt, very annoying as I only changed that 3 months ago. The auxiliary tensioner wheel has a chunk out of it too, so...
Thanks for info. I was thinking of the blanking plugs as seals, but the seals are at the other end.
Since I'm taking the head off, hopefully the head gasket kit will have those seals, maybe even the nut/bolt too.
Bit of a thread hijack here, but on the same topic.
About to order the tools and timing belt kit to sort my car out (as the belt has come all loose)
In the workshop manual it says:
So does the Gates timing belt kit come with all these bits? I'm pretty sure it comes with the camshaft...
there wasn't a whole lot of clanking. Now I'm getting further, I have a little hope. It still turns over by hand from the crankshaft and the two camshafts are more or less still timed together. The belt alternates between being tight and pretty slack at the top. Hopefully it's just come loose...
Found a thread with details of all the timing belt tools, so just going to order that from Renault, can always sell afterwards.
Pretty happy with the procedure, makes sense to release all the pulleys and free wheel them to be certain the timing is spot on. Was a bit surprised all the timing...
Hey Jack, just tried to pm you but you inbox is full!
I'm heading down to Surrey tonight, then heading up to London in the morning on Saturday. If you're about and I can borrow the timing tools (happy to leave you a deposit) that would help me out big time.
I'll be online, so pm me if you...
Exactly that. They definitely weren't that sooty before, and wouldn't expect it on a long journey. If you're just doing short runs, it'll be running rich a lot of the time anyway when warming up, so I wouldn't worry.
Yeah I was visiting my parents who live in Cobham, car conked out just before I got there. Borrowed my mum's car to get back up here, which I need to deliver back to her soon, so I've bought myself a little runabout. Towbar and space to throw an engine in the back, perfect!
May be back...
I'm going through all this myself right now, so may be in touch for advice on where to source an engine. Hoping to get the head off first and see how bad it is though.
Just had to shell out £200 to get the car back from Surrey where it broke back to Sheffield, where I live and will be fixing it!
What do the tippex marks mean? That they did it without the proper tools?
Went on trust with regards the belt change, but had a receipt for the parts. clearly a massive error!
Is it possible to use the 172 engine?
Until I get it apart it's difficult to know what I needthanks for replies...
I was driving from Sheffield down to Surrey, in fairness in a fairly spirited manner. When I hit some of the 50mph average speed sections, when changing the music I noticed a new faint rattle. I thought it was probably the exhaust heatshield, attached to the steering rack which I changed last...
It wasn't that bad in the end. I did drop the subframe would have been almost impossible otherwise, but didn't do anything with the exhaust. I left all the pipework with the car, unscrewed the pipe joints on the rack itself. Took a good day, but was a bit better than I was expecting!
No more...
Final job (I hope) that I need to do to get the car sorted after a knock into the curb. Already changed subframe, strut and hub!
Probably gonna have a go this weekend, but just wanted to check a few things. The renault sport guide suggests the following, but I wondered if I definitely need...
Cheers, alignment looks fine, as all the bent bits are replaced now. Surely something would have to be drastically wrong for it to not be aligned still?!
So I think it must be a duff sensor. Which is a pain cos the little b******s don't like coming out!
Actually I've just remembered trying...
