I think the point is that it's a clio, and the intention is to race a clio.
What's the point in transplanting some Honda engine into it? It's no longer a clio then. Might aswell keep the jap in the crap, and race that....

Having looked back, I can see which point you mean.
On an unrestrained member, weld of that quantity would cause distortion.
However, I would expect the construction of the chassis to resist a large proportion of the inherant bending.

A single run of around 100mm applied locally to the contact points of the cage isn't enough to bend the chassis.
Furthermore, you cannot judge the quality of a weld based purely on visual inspection.
