Time Attack Build Begins (Cage in!!!)

  172 Race Car
Those ducts look awsome against the white, agree tho that they are WAY too much money for what they are.....

Those bushes easy to fit then?

defo!

bushes are pretty simple. Hard to go wrong with the actual removal of old and fitting of new. Just sometimes they can be a bit fiddly to get in.

  80MPG BEEZA
i'm waiting on delivery on the same set of ducts! lol looks like it good be a bit of a chew on you got any more close up shots of them? thinking about spraying mine before fixing

  Focus RS Mk1
any close up pictures of the ducts Matt?

looking good. i used Suffolk flocking for my dash (if you remember it) was spot on.

:S there pressed in with 5 tons

how the hell did you do that? a local garage bent the arm on mine getting them out!

so we cut them .. which took forever.

coming along nicely mate, when are you hopin to have it finnished?

car has to be ready for first round, which is April 5th & 6th.

Engine is nearly ready to go, just waiting on the pistons, as they are a custom GDI spec. So once they turn up will throw it in, run it in, then be mapped to buggery.

I am just waiting on the dash to come back, then once that is in, can sort the fire extinguisher system, and should be ready to cook!

simple, cut the middle rubber out, then hacksaw through the outer shell, then hammer out.

had both sides out and new ones in in about half an hour.

welds look horrible.. how much heat has gone into your no longer straight chassis..

no longer straight chassis? explain more please mate.

As stated in an earlier post, not looking for beuty, looking for quality.

I trust Mark Fish in what he does, and am happy with the welding that has been done.

lol. Div.
A single run of around 100mm applied locally to the contact points of the cage isn't enough to bend the chassis.

Furthermore, you cannot judge the quality of a weld based purely on visual inspection.

  Tweaked Leon Cupra R
I didn't judge the "quality" of the welds... just implied that for the size of them the amount of heat that has gone into creating a weld of that size WILL have distorted the chassis. (visually noticable or not)

Usually anything welded with a thickness like that would have to be de-stressed afterwards!

  Golf GTI 16V
Having looked back, I can see which point you mean.
On an unrestrained member, weld of that quantity would cause distortion.
However, I would expect the construction of the chassis to resist a large proportion of the inherant bending.

I'm sure that whoever installed this cage carried out a proper assessment of the job and its risks to the integrity of the chassis, and wouldn't have undertaken such work had he thought it would have irreversable effects on its alignment.

The point is unless the chassis has been distorted to a degree that renders the car unroadworthy, then argueing about the welds and their effect on the performance of the car is irrelevant.

saying that the chassis looks bent now is nothing compared to what it might look like after time attack with mat at the wheel ...

Also I dont think Mark Fish would have done anything he didnt think was safe, he has great knowledge of the clios and racing with them.

Re: Exhaust Wrap or Ceramic

I have seen mention of Camcoat, but has anyone got experience of Zircotec (see www.zircotec.org). They seem to do a much thicker coating than anyone else. I bet it costs more, but is it better? They say they do F1 cars and the like so I guess its good stuff.

I've just talked to Zircotec and Camcoat and both quoted me a similar price.
From reading other websites it seems that Camcoat is just a paint and there are reports of it peeling off.......id be mighty upset if that happened after spending good money!!!
So - thinking of giving Zircotec a try. Has anyone out there used them?

Right, havent updated in a while, not that i have done much!!

So....

Decided to mount the oil cooler, in prep for the engine to go in. Felt that mounting it to the front cross member would be best, as it allowed good airflow through the bumper, and was a solid beam to mount to.

I had to make up a small bracket to mount the right hand side of the cooler, as you cant get into the beam to tighten the bolts ( as i wanted it to be removable)

Then it was a case of remounting the front bumper.

next i did a bit of work to the interior.

i wrapped all my cabling, to help protect it, and neaten it up a bit. i then routed as much of it out of sight as possible. Most of the rear i managed to run through the inner rear 3/4 panels, which once the carbon door cards are on will hide it nicely.

Next on the list was to fit the manual window winders. Easy and quick job to do!

Now that was sorted i started to fit my door cards.

I bought some off the net (same ones as ben_p got, cant think of the company name) but was a bit disappointed with them when they arrived. they had so much glass fibre backing, it almost made them heavier than the original plastic door cards!!

Luckily my mate joe works at URT (company than specialises in carbon) so he used them to take a copy, and made me some out of super thin, top quality carbon.

They have a few scratches on them, but its function over form, so i am happy. and before anyone asks, the quality of the carbon and labout time that went into them comes in at around £380...... !

After getting the first one on the heavens opened, so i had to abondon!

Car is going in for major work this week tho.

Firstly its off to Mark Fish to have some seat rails welded in. This is due to the cobra extra low subframes not allowing me to adjust my seat far enough over to the centre of the car, which means i am sligtly off set to the steering wheel.

Custom Cages supplied the kit..

Then i pick it up from Mark Fish and take it directly to GDI for the engine to be fitted.

A bit later than schedule, and with a few bits still needing to be done, its gonna be tight, as first round is on the 6th of April!

Nice work, not tempted to remove some of the door inners to save weight ?

i never have done with any of my cars, so i guess it didnt occur to me.

i can always take the strippage to the next level in the future, ie romove maximum material!

out of interest, does it matter whether the connections on the oil cooler point up or down?

nope, they can run any direction you want. i am guessing due to the oil being pumped through, rather than relying on gravity etc.
