This. Mine failed it's MOT on washers not working (of all things!) so asked the bloke if they had to be there and he said the same so I took it home, pulled them out and sent it in with two holes in the front bumper. Passed but got an advisory note saying "Headlight washers removed".
Mine did exactly the same thing and it was the thermostat. Renault want nearly £30 for one which I thought was taking the piss so got one from local factors for £7 with the gasket and it works fine. For now.
You'll lose a bit of coolant changing it although I didn't check how much. Maybe a...
Change the fluid first! It may save you a lot of time, money and ruined hands. Even my completely mullered pump that had tuned all the fluid black and sounded like a supercharger responded well to a fluid change.
I did but mine needed doing anyway. I think you can buy the belt on it's own for around £23 or the whole kit for £72 which is what I did. Comes with tensioner and bottom idler pulley which is a bit of a faff to change as you'll need to lift the engine up a bit but if it was me and it had done 3k...
Careful when you do the pulley bolts back up, they don't need to be super tight and I snapped one of mine :( The torque settings are all listed here somewhere.
When all the bolts are out of the pump it still feels like it doesn't want to come out. To be honest I lost my temper a bit and smashed...
You must have small hands! I don't even know how you can get the slam panel off with the bumper in place but there you go.
If it's a new belt you don't have to take it off entirely which saves some hassle. You can just drop it off the alternator pulley :) Jubilee clip goes around the spring you...
Probably the PAS pump. Was on mine. Fluid change helped it but it was utterly shagged by the time I decided to do something about it and the fluid had turned black.
It's not quite as simple as it sounds.
I would definitely take the bumper and headlight off as a bare minimum as I don't see how you could get it out otherwise as it goes through the headlight hole? Maybe no aircon? Once you're at that point you may as well take the slam panel off as well - two...
I was quoted around £600 for belt and dephaser by Ren7oaks who should be local to you. Obviously this includes aux belt kit as well. Dunno how much for fluids etc but I wouldn't pay someone to do that anyway.
Could pop the bumper off and have a look at the rad easily enough. Mine went on the N/S bottom corner which is apparently quite common for whatever reason and easy to see once it's exposed.
Have a look for a build up of shite on the thermostat housing and any leaks on the stat to rad pipe...
Mine did this and it turned out to be a small radiator leak which was very difficult to see until it got worse as then the coolant could be seen dripping off the bottom of the bumper after ragging it. Now it's doing it again to a much lesser extent because the thermostat gasket is dying and it's...
For the benefit of anybody searching this in the future this is now SOLVED. I can't seem to change the title to that though...
After much arsing around and pumps/tensioners/belts it turned out to be the crank pulley. Even though it looked ok another one was fitted to see and the problem went...
Nope. Been told it isn't the crank pulley by Ren7oaks and they reckon it's another duff pump which is just marvellous and a little bit odd because it's showing exactly the same issue. It seems to be getting more intermittent and some days it doesn't do it at all but to be honest I haven't driven...
Ok, I've changed the belt again and it's still the same. Having done loads of reading and searching on here I'm beginning to think the crank pulley might be my issue.
I understand the the bolt that holds this pulley in place holds the cambelt pulley in place as well. I don't have the tools to...
Was wondering the same. Tensioner isn't seized at least as when I last had the front off you can see it moving when you yank the belt between the alternator and the AC compressor. I did check the length against the old one but if it was only a bit different I wouldn't have noticed to be honest...
It never used to make the belt scream though. The crank is clearly spinning faster than the PAS pump. Somehow. Basically the pump slows right down under load and the belt gets dragged around it which is exactly the same problem I had before I changed the whiney and definitely shagged pump for...
Thanks for the offer mate, much appreciated! Managed to convince my local Renault dealer to give me the one I should have had before though so got one now. Car is still mucking about though and having got someone else to go from lock to lock while I take a look it's still the PAS pump slowing...
Already bought what I was told was the whole kit and replaced the belt and tensioner. You're right though, that wheel on its own is £45!
Apparently this was "left out" of my kit and another one is being ordered in for me to collect. Soon hopefully.
What I kinda want to know but am dreading...
It occurred to me yesterday that I didn't change the roller thing as it didn't come with my belt kit. Looks like it's going to be a complete pain in the arse to get off and require engine mount off AGAIN but I shall do this and report back. Everything seemed to rotate happily but without...
Hmmm. Not really. Back of the old tensioner looks nice and clean and there seems to be good (s**t loads) of tension in the belt. I will check this when inevitably it all has to come apart again. Maybe it would be worth a blob of grease between the mounting face and the back on the tensioner...
Hi :) Car is a 172 mk2 with AC. Stock belt setup.
I have used many threads on here to get to the point I am now so firstly, thank you to everyone who took the time to explain how the tensioner on the belt works, how to remove bits and where all the bolts are! It has been invaluable and the car...
I've got this and it's really starting to piss me off - literally feels like something needs tightening? Got tramlining and bump steer too. I'm thinking ball joints or wishbone to subframe bushes?
