Andy, met up with Chip collected engine Monday, engine was all good, bore scoped each cylinder all mint inside, looked at the bottom end with the scope via the turbo drain and sump drain, few cobwebs, blasted them with the air line all good there, fitted a new timing belt (you owe me £35) met...
For Andy's sake (more his wallet) I would hope not and unless the engine has been left outside and filled with rain water very little will need doing, but I do not have a crystal ball, I do have access to a bore scope, honing equipment and wash/degreasing tanks.
It is in my opinion not worth the...
Tony,
I know what it had last time/year, I built it.
You do have to do rebuilds on engines used for racing as they tend to explode if you do not do preventative maintenance, after all you are not using it for shopping trips to the supermarket.
The standard roller rockers are a known problem I...
It will probably be time to change the standard roller rockers as they have now had two seasons, ideally change to the Cat Cams version, at least renew them for another standard set, lap the valves, crack detect and measure the pistons with a view to replacing them, at least new rings main, big...
Tony,
I meant 422 cams.
As you say if you like it how it is leave well alone.
I have never been happy with the oil control rings provided with those pistons, maybe next season think about replacing the pistons with a different brand, they will be past their best by then.
That engine also has ARP...
Tony,
What did you think of the engine ?
I am sure James has explained every thing.
I would recommend a proper oil to air cooler with AN-10 pipe work.
If you do decide to go 423's the standard timing figures as recommended by Cat Cams were wrong for this engine.
Steve
No to the fist and yes to the second.
I had the crank in and out so many times when I was using plastigauge checking bearing clearance, crank and oil jet clearance, I must have took some of the pictures without noticing the main caps.
At the final stage of torqueing the ARP rods bolts, checking...
I am surprised that no one has spotted the deliberate mistakes shown in the pictures.
And just to put Andy's mind at rest, they were all corrected.
Lets see who can spot them.
Steve
Sounds like the flywheel bolts came loose or failed for what ever reason.
I know you are on a budget, but speak to Mark, £330 buys a steel flywheel and ARP flywheel bolts, looking at that mess, probably in your case the best insurance money can buy.
Steve
There are ARP PRO flywheel bolts available for this engine, these give a better location of the flywheel and can be re-used, £11 each bolt sound like cheap insurance.
was the flywheel still in one piece around the crank bolt holes ?
Were there any remains of the flywhel bolts in the end of the...
If using the standard Clio crown wheel an adaptor needs to be purchased and welded to it, most gearbox companies remove the standard diff and post both the new Gripper, the original diff and if the have already purchased it the adaptor, back to Dave Mac/Gripper Diffs, getting the crown wheel...
That Red Ford RS200 belongs to a friend of mine, original red car, 'S' spec better trim specification with air conditioning (now removed), he has had it from new, displayed at the BHP show at Lydden Hill on the Monday.
Steve
I helped sort and an Audi 20v for a well known Time Attack Lotus Exige, good spec, converted 2 liter, steel main caps, steel girdle, baffeled sump, steel rods, forged pistons, solid lifters, deep locating shims, Piper mechanical profile cams, Piper vernier, Neil Roper ported head, double valve...
I have spoken to BIGGASH about what I would use, it is not the ports size that is the issue, they can be increased far bigger than what is actually required.
The combustion chamber shrouding the valves that is the problem, I did look at reshaping the chamber to help, but it got too expensive...
If they measured up 3thou clearance did you use the extra clearance bearings ?
3 thou would give you low oil pressure did you not see that ?
I do not like ACL but they do the job.
There would have been enough oil for the rod but not if the main bearing spun blocking oil supply.
Steve
What was the condition of the main bearings ?
if the main bearing spins blocking the oil gallery, tagged big end bearings will not help, as I stated.
Steve
I would agree that if an engine has a problem with lubrication tagged bearings will not solve the problem, but it has been found that with other production engines used in competition which use untagged bearings in standard form, that when tagged bearings are used reliability increased, which is...

Steve
Shimming is done to set the preload on the bearings so when cold the diff bearings have no clearance and the bearings 'drag'.
They are set that way so when the gearbox casing expands when the gearbox is up to tempature the diff bearings (and other bearing) have the correct clearance and preload...
I have oil temperature and oil pressure data from James from Mallory and Oulton Park and I have data from other F4R engines, so no guessing from me.
