Hello again. Just to close this one off, eventually diagnosed the problem as... knackered ball joint. Huzzah! O/s ball joint was knackered, with the joint bit lifting in and out of the socket in which it sits*. £80 ish later, ball joint saved, problem solved. Thanks for the help chaps...

Cheers for the input. Quick update: jacked the front of the car up this afternoon and gave both front wheels an exploratory waggle. No obvious play in either wheel that would suggest the ball joints are knackered. I'm no expert so will get the garage to confirm on my next trip, I think.

Edit: on reviewing my own photos again, I see that it may be that I need to feed the cable through the small hole on the left hand side of the winder mechanism. Will have another look at the weekend.

Thanks mate. I used that to get the seat cover off and expose the mechanism, but the odd thing is that when I compare the 9th and 10th pictures in that sequence, the winding mechanism on that seat does not resemble the one from my driver's seat (and my metal clip is still present). In...
