Hey folks

Lookin at getting a 1.2 Clio as a run about then get a 172 when the times right.

So a few questions

Is it best to get the 16v or is the 8v just a good?

At what sort of milage are they a no no to buy? 100k or more?

What spec is the best to get? Dynamique/ expression etc etc. I've got about £1200 to spend.

Cheers

The early 1.2 16vs (01-04) are bad for throttle bodies, ecu/uch, fuel inj & rail, top inj wiring looms, map sensors and engines going wrong! So if you are going for a 1.2 16v got for 04 onwards when they facelifted the engine imo

I paid £900 for my 1.2 ph1 clio 16v Sport. FSH and 12month MOT. 68k on the clock and in pretty mint condition. You should be getting a nice clean clio with under 100k for 1200 imo

Doesn't have to be a 1.2 it's just there's far more of them for sale mate. I'd have a 1.4 or 1.6

  Changes to often
go for the mk2 ph1 1.6 RSi you can pick them up for under a grand, and are a really nice car, half leather seats, alloys, air con, cheap on insurance, and very nippy

I've found a nice red one. 5 door 1.2 dynamique. 2004 with 90,000 on the clock. Really nice actually. Little faded and slightly patchwork-ish but I can make that better. Timing belt done and part history. Only £1150. Which I think is a very good price?

Few problems though
-slight misfire under load but he's fitting a new coil pack and ht leads to solve this problem. This misfire makes the engine management light flash. Is this normal?
-when the car hits 60mph the abs and SERV light comes on. When stopped and ignition is turned off then turned back on it clears. But again at 60 it comes on. He says he's been told its the lambda sensor(s) and its a common fault. Is this true? Any links about it?
-slight(and I mean slight) noise from rear. Sounds like a wheel bearing to me. Are these any more difficult than a normal car? It's got drums

Cheers

Anyone any input? Really like the car and don't want it to get snapped up by someone else but don't want it if it's got major problems.

cheers

I was in a similar position about a fortnight ago.

I got a tidy up together 1.2 16V expression, was advertised at 1500 but got it for 1200. It had 70k miles. So should be able to get something decent for the money! just remember most sellers will always go down on the price if you haggle a bit;)

Not sure about the faults. The Service light thing clearly isnt normal.
I think if you be patient and keep looking you will find something with no problems. Just got to think if those problems are obvious what other problems could there be thats not so obvious? But ofcourse thats the same with any car, could always be hidden problems.
But I got mine for 1200 with nothing obviously wrong, only thing I discovered was a belt buckle didnt work lol.

TBH if i was you I would keep looking. He says hes going to fix problems etc, well he should of already really before showing people the car. Sounds dodgy to me, but hey Im not expert! :)
