1.4 2004 Clio overheating issues.

  Renault Clio 04 1.4L
I am sadly having a problem with my otherwise good Clio. I had noticed in the last month or so my car's radiator fan running for a few minutes after the engine was switched off, but I put that down to summer weather (wishful thinking in Britain...). However now my coolant temperature indicator is maxed and I am seeing a warning light appear. So far my solution has been running the fans on full heat and pointing them out the window which seems to work but obviously isn't a permemant fix.

What could the cause be and is there anyway to fix it without going to garage?

thermostat is probably knackered, unless there is no coolant in your expansion bottle
