Hi

could anyone thell me if they own a 1.6 8 -valve si clio 1998 if so whats it like to own and drive or if any body has had one look ing to get one but seems like there rare.

I had one back in 1999. Yeh, they were originally 1.6 with 8 valves and 90bhp. They were basically a stop gap until the clio2 original 16v came out (1.6 110bhp). It was all right and the K&N induction i fitted to it worked very well. If I were you though I try and find a 1.4 16v Si, 98bhp and you can rev it quite a bit higher.
Theres no real difference in the model between the 1.4 RN (or was it RT??) apart from a cat 1 alarm, sports seats and a firmer ride.

I have a 1.6 8v RXE 1998. fantastic car, full stainless steell exhaust and decat and your laughing! - to people who know me, yes i had a problem with my decat, but i know how to fix it ;) fantastic car and beats the 1.4 16v off the line and on the twisties as i prooved to my gfs brother who drives a new dynamique. and as for the 1.4 16v, doesnt that only rev to 6000rpm the same as the 1.6 8v???

I stand corrected>.....;) Ive never driven the 1.4 16v.
The only Clio 2s that Ive have driven were my old Clio Si , a 1.2 8 valve RN, a 182 and my 182 Cup. But anyway I had an Si for two years and it was all right, quite torquey, until you hit just over 4k rpm. I imagine though if "lemonnobby" is looking to modify the Si, it would be probably easier to find parts for the 1.4 16v engined car.

thats true enough, though you cant doo much to them and ITG will custom make filters for you, and custom built exhuasts arent that expensive compared to off the shelf ones. so mods are just as easily available.

theduckeatspork:

the 1.6 8v does not clearly beat the 1.4 16v. Sorry but the only reason you could have won is being a better driver and having had some mods.

The figures dont support what your saying :(

The 1.6 8v has 90bhp, top speed of 112 and a 0-60 of 10.3

The 1.4 16v has 98bhp, top speed of 116 and 0-60 of 10.2

You cant split them that easily.

yeh the 1.6 8v are quite rare. I looked at one (an RXE) before I got my 1.4 RT Alize 8v but never went for it because you could tell it had been in a nasty bump.

Yep 90bhp, and spec isnt too bad

doesnt seem too much of a noticeable difference between a 1.4 16v and a 1.6 8v

IMHO the 1.4 16v is a better buy than the 1.6 8v because:

1. Its supposedly faster

2. Its in the cheap TAX band

To answer the questions above regarding the 1.4 16v Si:

It revs to 6500rpm

Sports interior including dash, seats yada yada

Has 14" standard alloys (beasts!)

Has sport headlights / fogs / splitter etc

Yeh thats true I forgot about the headlights, I changed mine to the double optic ones. I think later 1.6 Sis had double optics for about two months until Renault changed the engine and standard specs. I cant believe at the time i paid extra for those sh*tty alloy wheels and a crap cd player, but those were the days when you got ripped off when buying a new car.
The funny thing too, is I had the original headlamps sitting in my garage since june or july 1999, so I put them on ebay a couple of months back and got around 35 quid a light. nice one.

fair enough, the 1.4 16v had the same exhuast mods and properly set up k&n57i (i know its properly done as i did it) and mine only has the exhaust. all i can do is talk from my experience and my experience is the 1.6 is the better car, but from what people are saying, there is little between them so buy one you find a good example of!

hello and thanks for your coments its all about price and insurance for me plus 8 valves are so much easier to work on, but i work for renault so its not that much of a problem has anybody changed there rear lights for phase 2 ones as there better i thought about trying to get hold of a 172 ph1 front bumper but i dont think it will fit wings different shape on 172, have seen some things for modifing but i wont go mad with it.

get the 1.6 then, just colour coded the front bump strips and put a 172 rear bumper on. thatll still look really good, is what i intend to do if i ever get round to it. they are a great car. Ive got a full stainless steel system and have a decat that i will be putting back on soon. You can get a custom made ITG panel filter for 42 quid. Thats about as far as I am going with performance mods, then will colour code exterior and work on th interior. They are a great step up from smaller engines if like me you cant make the jump upto a 172/182 just yet.

When I figure it out Ill post a pic of my old monaco blue Si up, in the meantime defo go for an induction kit, the 8 valve runs no way as hot as the 16v engine, and the throttle body is towards the back of the engine bay so from what i remember (it was a long time ago) the filter is almost up against the firewall. The K&N part number was (i think) 57-0242. I actually saw an Si 1.6 8v on ebay a couple of days back - they were hoping though had a buy now price of £3500 on an S plate, it didnt make its reserve and ended up at around £2k.

lol

just buy a valver or equivalent, then u can safely say its faster than either a 1.4 or 1.6

my old axgt was quicker than a 1.4 16v, but im pretty sure i will be told otherwise ;)
