10,000K travelled, 1 Island, 1 toyota corolla 1989, 1.8 diesel SE - gap year edition

Right my younger brother has just returned from a gap year in New Zealand.

He subscribed perfectly to the traditional mix of hiking bag, 1 pair of underwear, camera and all his worldly savings gaffa taped to his chest in case of being robbed!

I just had to share the pictures of the car he bought & traveled in for complete peanuts as I have honestly never seen anything like it. (admin some of the images have swear words & genitals in so hopefully you can agree its all good natured ;))

Its a Toyota corolla, 1989, 1.8 diesel "SE, with 288,000 miles under its belt, named Digby the G-rolla apparently.

They traveled, ate & slept in the thing for 6 months and then abandoned it on a lonely back road with a popped radiator when home time came! Check out the pictures:

The beer can is actually glued to the roof and apparently could be used to lure drunkards out onto the road at night :S lol

Yeah makes my gap year look a bit tame tbh :(

Anyway he reckons he had a tear in his eye when the walked away from the car, became quite a friend apparently!

He should have shipped it back via a container. Wait months for the car to turn up, but it would be fairly cheap, if you knew the right people.

Muchos respect to him for doing this. My first trip out to Canada in '95 almost culminated in four us buying a '64 Chevy camper van for $800. We had the idea of travelling about in it, but never had the bottle to do it.

Shame really. Good to see that some people just 'do it' though!

Hopefully next year or the year after I wnt to go to America... buy a crappy car and drive it up from Florida to Canada via LA! Got a month planned to do it in!

Re: 10,000K travelled, 1 Island, 1 toyota corolla 1989, 1.8 diesel SE - gap year edit

yeah he loved it, apparently there are some good looking birds numbers on the car too ;) However being on the other side of the world I don't think they have much potential.

He went out there to work as a photographer for a day trip company, worked there for 2 months in the peak season and then traveled for the remainder of the trip. He has over 3000 images from the trip  Some of the places he's been and the people he's met look incredible tbh.

Probably not a good idea to bring the car back, thing was completely f*cked by the sounds of it and would never have passed an MOT without some serious £'s! I think he bought it for about roughly £50 lol

You should remember chap, your never really too old to do this sort of stuff! Month of work would be ample to do some traveling across America, pick up a shed when you get out there etc, why the f*ck not!!

Ha, well four weeks of not shaving, no showers, sleeping rough and sod loads of dirt thrown up, kinda took it's toll ;)

Do it sooner rather than later mate. Time escapes you. Said I would do it again around 2010. Then came the job. Then the other half, etc.

Biggest problem is finding people that want to go :(

Normally you get the, "Ye Im well up for that, sound class!!"
Then when the time comes closer drop out with piss poor reasons
