160bhp...

how do i get my 1.6 8v it? Not that i can afford to dop anything to it right now, but thats my target figure if i decide to do exstenvive work to my car. Idea behind it is that with that kind of power I should be in the 172/182 leauge as my car would hopefully, still be around 200kg lighter than a 172 or 182. asll suggestrions on work needed and costs involved appreciated.

with all that money being chucked at it, i'd imagine your better off (financially and time wise) just putting a 172 engine in??!

^^^ words of wisdom. save your money up dude, it wont be worth the hassle for a start.

Loads of work, im sure its possible you would need, tb, extensive headwork, larger valves etc, a monster MONSTER cam custom exhaust manifold, plus exhaust, rebuilt bottem end as your prob going to have to rev it to about 9k oh and a few of those chip things off ebay. Dont see why it isnt possible tho i had roughly 125-130bhp out of my old 1.4 pug engine and with a 1.6 bottom end it would of prob got to 150ish and that was on carbs!

to be honest tho i would go the 172 route as it would be far more reliable

All the bits to do a 172 transpnat are only £1.5k + vat so it seems uneconomical to tune the 1.6 as it will become weeker and less reliable and need a new gearbox anyway.

how much would it be to have a 172 engine fitted? might actually work out cheaper for me to 172 my existing car

£1.5k was quoted but you could do it yourself with a garage it just needs the car taking to pieces and all relevent swopping.

the rxe is probably only worth £2500-£3000, as its a 1998 R. and would love the stealthness of a 5door 172 :) hopefully will just look like a nicely modified 1.2 when its finished, but then be a LOT faster hehe

what about a 16V cylinder head (if possible, cant see the 16V engine being any different) cams, TBs, zorst with decat, pannel filter or viper, remap etc

i dont really have a clue just having some ideas

asked about 16v head before, was told wasnt worth it, think i will go 172 route, all depending on insurance may have it given the AWT and GDI treatment before it goes in, cams, inlet manifold, smt6, maybe even throttle body/ies should see over 200bhp then

true but with the reduced weight of my car (wighing aorund 975kg) i would hopefully get similar performance levels. wont going that route anyway now

i meant labour charges on top of the bits, as i couldnt/wouldnt do it myself
Yep £1.5k labout costs.
Ktec were offing to do a conversion as a one off to learn how to do it for £500 I think. I'm not sure if anyone taken them up on the offer.
Your 1.6 wouldn't be much lighter than a 172 trnaspnat maybe 50kgs thats about it the 172 is heavy as its got otherheavy bits and pieces the engine isn't that much more.

Hillpower did some work on a 1.6 Megane a while back belonging to someone on here...same engine as yours...it could out accelerate a standard williams to 100. Thats was with a luminition ECU amongst other things though...

^^sounds interesting, any more info?

that was me who had the red megane coupe,i never said it would out accelerate a williams though,it was quick,it had polished & ported head, piper cam, williams injectors, supersprint manifold, decat, luminitoin management system it was about 130bhp

the 8v engine probably isnt worth the money to tune it imo

the 16v version is the one they use in the super1600 rally cars and is possible to get 250/260bhp but thats with truck loads of money

with a reasonable amount of money (say £2500...) its possible to get decent gains up to your 160bhp target

1.6 8v at 160bhp? No chance mate unless you turbo/supercharge it...TB's won't even get you close.

Ive managed 167bhp from a 1.4 8v Citroen lump! NA BTW

full race spec. was for "hot hatch" race series
in short:
1.4 8v
massive valves, fully ported VTS head
1.2 crank
1.4 block bored to take disp back to 1.4 (for regs, since we used short throw crank)
JE pistons, CR= 12.7:1
crazy cam (cant mind on exact spec, but it was something like 13mm lift, 300deg)
jenvey 42mm bodies
emerald ecu
own design exhst manifold

max power was over 9k rpm
