172 big ends

Hello, what would cause big end bearings to fail on an 2000 172 engine, at 30k?
Is this a known problem with this engine?
What would be the likley damage and what will it cost to fix!?

Many things can contribute, but the sole problem is oil supply. You will have to open it up to find out the cause of the oil starvation/heat.

To repair is a large bill, it will be cheaper to replace the engine.

there's one in cumbria on ebay for sale big end has gone, other things could be damaged also adding to the bill if your not doing the labour it can ammount to a pretty penny.
