172 engine into a 1.2expression ?

  Renault Clio 1.2
Hi guys I’m just looking for some advice on wether this is a straight forward swap and all mountings are the same as I’m looking to put a 172 engine in my 1.2 expression 2004 and also if there is anything I might need to make it possible.

You’ll need a donor car:

engine, brakes, gearbox, subframe, wiring, ECU, UCH, keys, steering column, steering rack and subframe.

be cheaper to buy a 172.

That said, it’s all swapping over. Nothing needs fabricating or anything like that.

Will the standard subframe not do the job then as I was pretty sure all the engine mountings were the same

No. The mounting points are the same but none of the 172 bits will bolt to a 172 frame. Plus the 172 frame is a lot stronger than a 1.2 one.

They do fit. You'll just need to add a hole for the 4th engine mount on the gearbox. @Martin_172 ran a dci subframe on his 182 van.

I'm in the process of doing the same to a 2008 Campus. A donor 172 is the best bet, means you have everything required.

I expected certain areas of wiring to be interchangeable (and they are in some instances, depending of the age of donor car vs the car youre building) but my 172 dash loom had different connectors for the door looms etc. So it would definately be more straight forward have a complete donor car. Eliminates these small issues.

As mentioned above, the steering column/rack is different. But provided you car has EPAS, you can retain all the original EPAS kit and run an aftermarket controller (although there are mixed opinions on these, they do work). A dci rack is what you want as it has the same rate as a 172 Cup, but its not essential. Just need to add 172 tie rods and rod ends.

I'm sure theres are a few threads on here with RS engines into non-RS cars.

I did it to the 1.5dci van. I did the mod on the sub frame for the extra gearbox mount. I added the wiring to the 182 loom to keep the electric steering rack.
Fitted an engine dynamics turbo kit ect. I had a scrap172 doner car to start, but ended up using 182 looms and ecu/uch,
It was worth every frustrating minute and the hundreds of pounds I spent. So it time and money don't matter do it (y)
