172 Ph1 Handbrake Front Cable Snapped

Anarkistic

172 Ph1 (2000 model year). Handbrake cable has snapped during MOT test (awesome!) today, and I'm absolutely stumped on how to fix it. Seems to be a million choices for the cables that go from the balancer/splitter to each wheel, but naturally it's not what I need.

It's snapped the short cable between the lever and the balancer block (see red line on screenshot). Cannot, for love nor money, find that cable on it's own, doesn't even seem to have a part number (?). Which leads me to think, does it only come as part of the handbrake lever itself, and cannot be replaced separately? If so, that's equally as difficult, seems to be not much around to buy to suit that.

Has anyone else had this issue, or have any expertise in it and can suggest what part(s) I should be looking for and where I might get them from? Or any other ways to solve this problem?

The part you have marked is a threaded rod and not a cable iirc? Be part of the handbrake mech. Have you been underneath and defo sure not a cable gone?

I have indeed been under it, definitely a cable rather than a rod coming out the handbrake assembly leading to the coupler which has snapped. Maybe the Phase 1s had a cable and changed to a rod later? The two cables leading to the wheels are intact.

Prob be a breaker job i guess, seems like mk3 also has short cable.

Id be tempted to change to the later setup if you cant find one. Will be easy enough.

Aye ph1s had a cable, ph2s rod.

Easiest bet is give Renomotive a shout and get a full lever from them, nice and easy to swap too. Well, as easy as fannying about with a cable would be, just an exhaust and razor sharp heat shields in the way 😂
