172, sell as is or repair?

  172
I've had an on going fight with my insurance for last few week regarding my 172 which has a knackered gearbox due to a bust/leaking CV. They've finally refused in writing to payout and have put it down as a mechanical fault. I dont have the time or skills to repair it myself and the best local garage quote i've had so far was £1000 which i cant really afford at the minute. Breaking it isnt an option as i dont have anywhere to keep it either.

So i can either look for a decent mechanic who can repair using a 2nd hand gearbox and hopefully sell it for £1,200 - £1,500. Or just sell it as is? I've been offered £500 from a local Renault breakers yard and they've offered to collect it. What would you do? Would i get more on ebay?

Car details = Black 52reg 172FF, 101k, 2 previous owners, mot'd until March 2012 but the tax has been removed. Gearbox and cv a side its in excellent condition and completely standard (never been moded). Both keys, log book, most services history, reciepts, paperwork, etc all available.

I need to get shot of it sharpish as the repair centre its current with will be returning it next week and its now un-taxed and un-insured (had to move this to our new car).

thoughts on a post card plz!

Re: 172FF, sell as is or repair?

I'm interested in buying it if you end up going down that route and collect to suit you! Can I ask why the insurance would of paid out? Had you made a claim for an accident that could of caused the damage?

i drove over part of a wooden pallet a few weeks back. 50 miles later the gearstick started jumping into neutral on me while on the motorway. rather than pull over and get on the phone to the aa i stupidely pushed the car another 25 miles to get to the next services (had a screaming 10 week old baby in the back and it was 10 oclock in the evening). turns out the driveshaft/cv had dropped all the oil which in turn wreaked the gearbox. i tried making a claim via insurance but they told me to do one and have put it down as a mechanical failure. at the end of the day the claim was refused so there's no reported acciedent/damage against the car... ie: its not a write off cat c/d or anything like that. as mentioned its been well maintanced and looked after and just needs a new gearbox and cv.

the car was driveable last time i was in it 3 weeks ago but changing gear was tough and i was getting a rattle from underneath. its been sat in a repair centre in Doncaster ever since so i wouldnt like to say its still driveable and certianly wouldnt recommend trying to drive any great distances. i was looking to sell the car after new year anyhow and i havent got the or money to get it sorted so i'll take the best price i'm offered, which is £500 so far.

get yourself some prices from specialists first in my opinion.

if you need a car and this one is solid (apart from the obvious) id be inclined to fixing it, aside from that rather than sell as it is. breaking it would get you more money id imagine

The repair centre the Clio is currently with is offering to drop it off at my house or an alterntaive local location. So if anyone is interested in buying the car as is and lives in South Yorkshire area i can have it brought to you. You can probably come and view it prior to buying it too but i'd need to check with the garage first.
