172 Test Drive on Saturday...

Ive found what appears to be a mint 2002 172 which Im going to look at on Saturday. 5 years of Clios (never owned anything else) and finally in a position to get one I really want.

Anyways, its done 13k in pretty much exactly 3 years. Am I right in thinking it needs servicing at 12k or two years? Havent looked at the documentation yet but would there generally be anything that would need changing at this point? Id imagine it was serviced early 2004 and hasnt been touched since, obviously time will tell though.

Is there anything else I need to pay particular attention to? Ive driven Clios all my life and read a lot here so Im well aware of potential rattles, but is there anything in particular worth doing on a test drive apart from the normal things that may bring any problems to light?

Blimey, 13k in 3 years. Not even run in yet and I doubt all the rattles have come out yet.

..ya service at 12k, so it should have had it, depends who you talk to but nothing should need doing, mine has the same mileage/age and all it needed was a new rear wiper rubber, service was £170 (depends on the dealer tho)

From my experience as a lowish mileage 172 owner of the same age (and from having another Mk2 Clio in the house and my parents having one too!), Id say there are very few inherent problems to look for on a Mk2 of any kind.

The presence of common niggles will depend a lot on whether the previous owner has used the 3 year warranty at all. Im just thinking of things like the exhaust centre section (aka 4k rattle), which a lot of 172s have had replaced under warranty.

I know that the previous owner of my 172 had a fair few things done under warranty because he was particular about the condition of the car. On the other hand, some people dont bother because they dont drive the car often/hard enough to notice.

Anyway, the basic message is that if youd asked about 16V/Willy problems Id write an essay! As the 172/182 get older the list will lengthen, but overall theres not much to say really.

dont be to concerned about mileage.theres loads of cars that are clocked from new you wouldnt know.

Is it out of warranty because an 02 plate must be very close to 3 years old

Is it standard?

How much is it up for?
