Is this the correct part number, before I open the box....

states: Safrane, Laguna 1, Megane 1, Clio II on it.

Don't think so the 172 pad is used on some versions of the Laguna, Megan and somhtin else but I don't think its used on the safron.
I'd suspect you've got normal nine RS pads.
However if Renault sold you then and there not right you cna take them back its there error.
