Golf GT & A4 Avant
Been slowly reading and reading and building up kit so decided to attack my GF's Mk4 Golf TDi in silver to get some proper practice. I'll put up pics later once they've all downloaded but it was in a pretty dirty mess.
I borrowed a megs G220 from a friend, and used a C.Guys Hexlogic green / heavy polish pad after recommendations and fear of damaging/ burning paint. I used Gtechniqs P1 polish with it. Am I right in thinking VW paint is fairly hard when correcting? Although the car now looks lovely, I have only made minimal reduction to the visual swirling, not got rid off it. Going to be ordering a proper cutting pad for next time. Would the heavy polish pad be ok on the clio or would I still need a cutting pad? I'm too scared of damaging the LY.
I also had trouble with the polish drying out fairly quickly. I would apply a 4" 'cross' of polish to the pad and do say half a door / 1/4 of the bonnet. I was only making 1 to 2 slow passes at speed 1, 1x slow pass at speed 3, 1x slow pass at speed 1 again with less pressure. As it's water based and watching GTechniqs vids doing it I was using distilled water to spray the pad to try between each panel and reduce it drying out but didn't make much difference. What should I do differently?
Masking. What a pain in the ar$e that is. was using blue 3M on all parts, all as done in JimWD's thread today on the blue R32. Would it stick? In the end just stayed well clear of any plastics or badges and door handles.
Unfortunately I know no-one else that does this as the guy I borrowed it from just seems to play with it. I spent all day on the car, and luckily applying the GTechniqs C2 sealant took minutes otherwise it would have been getting dark. I was ready to hand the G220 back and never bother with correction again, just cleanse and protect, but I want to know what I was doing wrong.
