2 days of caliper scrubbing later...

  Clio 172
My arms are killing me from scrubbing these four calipers for the past two days. It seemed like a good idea at the start. Was a right pain, but now worth it. I went through two wire brushes in order to get it done..

Here's the rear...

... they're not as orange as that, but bright red. Had the wrong light setting on the camera. Just drying overnight now, waiting for new pads to go in tomorrow.

Looks good....it's a job I've thought of doing but know I'll get really fed up with and wish I'd never started!

...and Hammerite apparently. Saw a Supra yesterday and that's what the guy had done. Poor brush work though.;)

ah fair enough mate.

make sure you clean those discs before you put the new pads in or u'll end up with oily/greasy pads! :)

It's the first real work I've ever done myself on a car, so I'm well chuffed.

Looks good , i was thinkin of doin' mine in red but was bothered about the brake dust etc ....

You should have used these wire brushes in a drill , a piece of p*ss , only takes minutes not hours . I have a spare set of calipers so it was easier cos i could do em off the car . I opted for black hammerite smooth in the end .

mine are done in satin black... i dont think the 172 brakes are anything to shout about tbh, especially the tiny rears :)

ha ha, yeah, I didn't think about the drill option until I was half way through the job. I think at a later date I will get a second set of calipers and do the whole job like you have

Miles easier off the car . Also stripped the calipers down , took the pistons out and greased inside the caliper cos my 172 failed its MOT on brake imbalance ,ASSH*LES at NATIONWIDE AUTOCENTRE . The insides of the piston will start to rust over time so i used Rust Remedy and sprayed em up with Zinc cold galvanising spray to stop em rusting again .The main reason i painted the calipers was more to stop em getting brake dust and sh*t baked on and going rusty but also they look better.

What do people think of these wheels . I'm thinking of puttin some on my new 182 when i get it . Just the standard 205 - 45 - 16's

Those look spot on. Off the car I would have used the spray version of the hammerite smooth though.

Argh cool, It was your source of cheap brushes comment at the end that made me think you didnt.

The calipers are only held on by two nuts. But they're a bugger to get off. That's why I opted for painting them on the car.
