24 Meg Broadband

  Titanium ph1 turbo
its bullshit, i checked the site about 3-4 months ago and it said my exchange would be active in march 2006 for 24mbit... I checked 2 weeks ago and now it just says that there are plans with no specific date...

it's one of those sites which wants to start on the hype, pre register users.. but by the time it's available, most ISP's will be able to offer it, not just them !

24 Meg eh ! I suspect that the you wouldn't ever see anything close to 24 meg ! You would have to be literally living on the doorstep of the exchange . The further away from the exchange you are the lower the connection speed due to voltage drop . Would be nice tho . Wouldn't mind 100 meg like they have in South Korea . We are so far behind the far east in regards of technology :(

BY are supposed to be sorting me a new modem as mine can't actually handle half 10m speed I'm on. They also insist someone nearby is downloading 24/7 and they can't do a thing about it?

I've got 8Mb connection with wanadoo, The only problem is most sites dont have access to that speed when it comes to downloads. But the ultimate is when your downloading off someone else and your only getting 300Kb upload off them, thats a pain.. especially with the bigger files :(

Im thinking about upgrading to bethere when i have finished on my 3 month bulldog offer.

I do pretty much live on the doorstep of the exchange so im expecting some bloody good speeds.

Just about get the full speed from bulldog. In fact my uploads are better.

D.

Who's your ISP? They should have upgraded you to at least 1mb by now if not 2mb for free or a very small ammount extra each month.

Im on 4meg telewest at the moment, apparently 10meg is coming soon but they have been saying that for 4 months so I’ll take it with a pinch of salt

Naa still on 4 meg here. Called them up twice now, in November they said I’d be upgraded by the end of the month and again in December they said by the end of there year. Nothing seems to have happened yet so I’ll believe it when I see it.

2meg :( atm will upgrade when its possible :)

8 Mbps is the specification maximum

-24 Mbps is ADSL2
But you have to be like within 250 metres of an exchange to get that speed so i think
Plus there's already ~200 metres of wiring in the exchange anyway

blah? :p i duno :)

but they can give me any speed, i just dont want stupid bandwidth caps.

100mbit with 7gb bandwidth cap would suck.. prefer to have 2mbit with no cap :)

an then its if they deliver the speeds they say :|

What do ya mean " pub talk " ?

If you read the part about how close do i need to be to the exhange to get 22mb . They say :

We " believe " that if you are less than 2Km away from your telephone exchange, you " should " be able to get higher than 8Mb, and up to 22Mb. Final download speed depends on the length and quality of your phone line, which we check during Sign Up. If your line won't support 22Mb, but will support higher than 8Mb, we will let you know what speed we think you can get during Sign Up, and set your line as fast as it can go. If we are not able to guarantee at least 8Mb, we will offer you a lower speed service.

" Believe " and " should " being the operative words . I would guess that the majority of people live further away than the stated 2km ( 1.25 miles ) from the exchange . So its more like an 8mb + connection depending how lucky you are , how near the exchange you are , length of line and quality .

I work in the industry mate and was employed as a UKonline ADSL2+ Beta tester way back in early 2005.

Distance has nothing to do with speed. It's line Attenuation that dictates what speed you can acheive and ultimately SNR which will factor how stable the line is. You could live above the exchange with a s**t line (aluminium, joints etc) and get slower speed than someone living 2 miles away.

As this is a little complicated for the general public to comprehend and in order to protect themselves from a mass of complaints most ISP's simply guard themselves by quoting distances.

PS - I helped construct Ukonlines "clause" so there's no need to remind me of it.

Yes line distance does not directly dictate speed, but line attenuation does increase along with distance, and so generally distance can be used to estimate the speed one can achieve

so i thought??

Not really. Only in the same way that as a kid you looked through car windows at the speedo and shouted to your mate "this one goes up to 160mph, that means it does 160mph"

Obviously as you grow up you learn there's a little more to it than that.

(That's meant to be taking the piss out of myself for being so naive as a child btw, not anyone else)

Happy now Mr grumpy - you know who you are.
