360 or PS3

  Ph-Sold!
360 myself unless you desperately want an HD/BR drive (but then I prefer MS!)

Look at the exclusive titles and see which one takes your fancy, not much in it overall.

i prefer the 182 FF over the 172 cup.

oops, wrong argument............

Like I have posted in the other xbox thread, i like both for different reasons.

  FOR SALE!!!
well having a 360 my self and mate having a ps3 graphic wise i cant tell the diffrence and i prefer the 360 controller as it has sum weight in it as the ps3 is dead light and feels like it will brake and looks wise id say the 360 as ps3 jsut get marks and collects dust dead easy but suppose it all comes down to what kinda games you prefer

I own both and hardly ever play my 360 these days. Having said that I'm not really someone who spends alot of time each week gaming. The 360 has a large list of games currently available, the PS3 has a lot less and it will remain that way for a long time. My head says buy the 360, my heart says the PS3.

Hope that helped :D

This months What Hi-Fi rated the PS3 as the better machine overall. Give it a read. PS3 is quieter, faster and allows the latest digital audio upto 7.1 as it has an HDMI output. The 360 is limited in sound ouput, problematic with putting out 1080p HD and costs nearly the same when you add on the HD drive. After the review, I'm gonna def get a PS3, but prob wait until I have some cash and Gran Turismo 5 comes out.

Your not going to get a definitive answer here cos both sides are normally fanboys for one or the other.

Ive always been a Playstation guy, I love the whole layout of the thing (Blu-Ray, Media Management and Gaming), and the type of games that come out on it are my cup of tea. The graphics amaze me but thats becuase I hadnt played 360. And thats another reason, my friends are all Playstation people so will be a lot more fun for online gaming.

X-Boxs seems to be breaking down rather a lot too.

Once you have it prices are fair too. So far I have got Motorstorm for £30, NBA 2K7 for £17.99, GT HD for free, Tekken 5 for £6.99 and James Bond on Blu-Ray for free for being one of the first 450k people to join Playstation Network (Free oposed to X-Box pay yearly / monthly).

I had a 360 but have nothing currently.

Firstly I wouldn't buy any console at the moment. Both of them are stupidly overpriced. If I ever buy another 360 it will be if they release the elite version with the HDMI socket. The component connection isn't as sharp as the VGA lead which I can't use cos of my PC but HDMI is as good apparently plus loads of TV's now come with more than one HDMI socket.

I also wouldn't buy the PS3 yet because there is a post launch games drought that will go on for months and hopefully a rumble pad will come out.

I'd like a PS3 but everytime I play on my brothers I can't help but feel disappointed with the graphics even compared to the 360 launch titles. The online service is really sloppy too. Downloading updates and demo's is just such a crappy experience compared to Live. Trying to have a game with voice chat etc is just a joke. Its a nasty jumble at the moment.

But all this can be fixed so I suggest you do what I do and wait. Lets see if the price drops, lets see if upgraded versions of both consoles come out and lets see if Sony can close the gap on graphics and online services. Meanwhile some decent games might start coming out.

TBH I wouldnt rely on a review by What Hi-Fi magazine. Fine if you are looking at buying a Bose stereo but they dont really have their fingers on the pulse when it comes to gaming!

The 360 is not problemetic with 1080P, and there are very few games that run at 1080P on both systems (in fact, there are slightly more 360 games that run 1080P than the PS3 at present). But unless you have a 50" tv who cares about 1080P?

You have to weight up a lot more when buying a new console. The games, the online gaming and support, prices etc etc, not just how many sound channels it can output (anyhow 7.1 is the same as Dolby Digital EX just with extra channel for a 2nd subwoofer, who really needs that??).

Buy both.

Dont you think the GT series is a bit souless? I loved GT 4 but once I had a nice car collection and completed a load of races, there was no goal anymore (not unless I wanted to hammer round le mans for an entire 24 hours real time, lol!).

Yeah I have 720p and 5.1 so anything above that is of sod all use to me! 7.1 would be a joke in my room. Where would I put the extra speakers?! It is bad enough setting things up for 5.1 with cables and speaker stands everywhere.

1080p is a nonsense for games too. Given that both consoles but the PS3 in particular have had frame rate issues running games at 720p you have to question the wisdom of running at a higher resolution!

Ive got both and I'd say the 360 is probably better value and has really great xbox live support. Not much in it graphics wise right now either. I think the PS3 would probably come out trumps with visuals and quirkier, more interesting games in the long run though.

Those graphics look awseome but are they just not the replay shots which are loads better than the game anyway?

And as for which console - I have a 360 and love it but its broke twice on me (I am on my 3rd console) and there are no good games out for ages - apart from Forza 2.

I was playing GTHD yesterday and the graphics look totally average if you are used to 360 or a top spec PC. They certainly look nothing like those screenshots when you are playing it. Although my bro said it is just a HD version of GT4 and not the proper new version of GT that will be coming out?

I am currently playing GT4 on a PS2 I have borrowed and have Tourist Trophy coming in the post! That will keep me going until the prices come tumbling down!

^^^ indeed.

GT HD is not a step up technically, and is in actual fact pretty average graphically with dodgy handling. I dont know why people keep going on about it.

Sony have been worryingly quiet about releasing anything for GT5 (which is the proper GT game, not the advertising campaign which is GT HD). I hope they put more into it than just buying better cars to progress this time.

Those shots of 'GT HD' have been processed as well.

You'd be better off looking at Motorstorm, its by far the PS3 racing benchmark at present!

The graphics in GT HD are acceptable, no worse than anything on the 360. That may change with the release of Forza 2.

Motorstorm and F1 are good racing games and fun online although they will be more enjoyable when Sony improve the online system and messaging system.

Buy both.

Plenty of people I know have TVs able to run 1080p and it wont be long before they are in most houses due to massive price drops in big TVs and the fact that it looks like 1080p wont be increased upon in the UK for quite a while. Having seen 1080p on a number of TVs, its definitely worth it. I know sound channels and pixel numbers are not the only important things but its good to have the options for future upgrades and surely high resolution is the point since the games are coming out in HD, lots more to come. Sound and Vision age hugely important to the entertainment of gaming and esp movies, Blu-Ray has the capacity for a new in-home movie experience.

Btw. 7.1 is 1 sub and 6 satellites. Something a lot of people are starting to get into. In a few years, I bet this will completely replace 5.1 as HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are in more homes. Then a PS3 will definitely have been the right option.

i bought a 360 back in oct got it from boots.com on a real good deal, hardly ever play it tho, i think all these new systems are great but your tv has to be the nuts to get the most from them?!

ive never played a ps3, plus i havent really seen one game on it which id actually play!so 360 for games content alone!and the games have dropped in price dramtically

I dont disagree the PS3 is better for movies, but I only play games on my console, I leave the movies to stand alone equipment which will always be better (if not cheaper), but the PS3 is a great way to enjoy Blue Ray. You need a big TV to appriciate 1080P as the naked eye wont really notice it below about 42". If you have a bigger one then its a good investment, if not its a waste of £200 as an average price increase.

Interestingly I found this 7.1 diagram and now I'm confused

EXwaves.jpg

It looks the same as 6.1 EX (on the left) with an additional rear speaker connected to the same channel, which is mono (7.1 on the right)? Thats from the Dolby site and suggests there isnt actually an extra channel? So if you have 6.1 you can just wire in an extra speaker to the same channel and you have 7.1!

Thing is whilst I wouldn't deny there is a quality difference between 5.1 and ProLogic2 it is not exactly essential or massive so the extra speakers you use when going from 5.1 to 6.1 or 7.1 are totally not a selling point and I would never pay more for a sound system that would support it. If 7.1 was all you could buy I would probably only install the 2 rear speakers as I don't have space and don't want cables everywhere.

My next TV will no doubt be 1080p but I'd rather Sony/MS keep the games in 720p whilst maintaining a decent frame rate. Also I'd rather they stick to 720p and have for example loads of cars in each race in GT5/PGR3 rather than ramp the resolution up to 1080p then have to have crappy 6 or 8 car races to maintain the frame rate and have to start reducing the graphics when playing online etc.

I am also hoping that as well as bringing out rumble on the PS3, a third party will release a PS3 pad that is identical to the 360 unit.

There are various versions of dolby, this link shows 7 different channels: http://www.dolby.com/consumer/technology/prologic_IIx.html

I agree 7.1 isn't a massive selling point, but atm Blu-Ray player are a lot more expensive than the PS3 and I don't think my parents would buy one for many years yet, but if I had a PS3, we would definitely watch Blu-Ray movies. With HD starting to come more available, I think people, esp enthusiasts, will want to enjoy HD sound and maximise audio as well as vision. These features make it future proof, compared to the 360 living only in the moment.

From a technical point of view the 360 is more capable of 1080P output than the PS3 is. The only thing that problematic is the lack of HDMI output.

Graphically the 360 should be able to do more impressive visuals while the PS3 is able to do things better in other areas.

But theres not much difference. Id say buy the 360 main reason being more games, Live is better for online play and there cheaper. And in the long run theres no extras on the visuals and chances are theres never really gonna be.

And the diagram for 7.1 is some what strange they are individual channels. HDDVD and Bluray have a maximum of 8 channels on there media at the moment. Which would be 7.1. So 7 satellites and 1 sub.

And the speed in which things like this are being adopted. Which is slowly 7.1 has been out for a while now. Chances are the PS4 will be out before many people take use of it. Not to mention the fact to get decent 7.1 audio out of the PS3 your gonna need to upgrade your home audio amplifier to cope with the new HD codecs. Such as Dolby TrueHD etc.
