They are absolutely brilliant to watch. There is a working on in a steam museum near the office, we hired the place for a work party a few years back and with the room lights off they look stunning. Proper bit if needs must engineering by some geniuses a hundred years ago.
They are really cool, last I heard there are still some actually in use powering lifts and suchlike. They’re too inefficient for industrial use any more.
That's fabulous, When I was an apprentice we stripped a smaller version out from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, I'll never forget the weight of the mercury and the litte balls when you spill it.....oops.......
