A/C button replacement

Hey guys,
I have a 182; my air conditioner fascia has some worn buttons on it. I was going to replace the whole a/c unit but the replacement one I got off ebay wasn't quite the same material as the one fitted in my 182 - the one I currently have is a soft sort of rubber, same as the rest of the centre console in my dash.

So I was thinking, perhaps its possible to pull the buttons out of the replacement unit and replace just the buttons - has anyone ever attempted that before? Wondering if its even possible or if I'll just end up runing both units.

is it just the lettering that has worn off?
if so, you could get some vinyl lettering cut in the same font and stick it on in place.

Ah yes not a bad idea
But unfortunately it is the logos of the fan and the Diagrams that show the direction of the air as well

yeah, that's not a problem to cut in vinyl either.
just an idea instead of ripping the dash out.

Can you let me know if there are any special requirements for the images? Must they be png or the exact size of the icons etc? I imagine me taking a photo of the panel is probably not sufficient!

Its fairly easy to take the unit apart. I've switched the buttons on mine previously.
