A few problems I've noticed: Advice needed

  Renault Clio 182
Hi,

I've owned my 182 for about a week now and I've noticed a couple of things.

1. What does your engine sound like on idle? mine seems to make more noise then its suppose to, but then again I've got nothing to compare it to. It kind of sounds like a quiet diesel.. Is this normal? I can't hear any knocking, but there's a slight clicking sound.

2. It doesn't seem to have as much of a surge of power when it hits 5000rpm as it did last week. I don't know if this is because I'm getting used to it or whether there's something wrong.

3. when turning the steering full lock to the right, it seems to be scraping or something. I've pushed both corners of the car to see if its the suspension but all seems ok there.

Any help would be great.

Anyone know how much Renault charge for a diagnostic or am i better off taking it to another garage?

1) When I start my car up for the first time it does 'whine' a little bit, but after it's warmed up it's fine. Does the noise go away or is it constant?

2) Difficult to comment on

3) Normal, it's the tyres skipping.

1. The noise is constant. Again I've got nothing to compare it to, but imo it doesn't sound quite right. Probably best taking it to a mechanic, but will any mechanic do, or does it have to be Renault?

2. Probably me being paranoid because of the first point.

3. Thank god, thought maybe I would have to change something to get it fixed.

My engine sounds like the one where yours is cold (when it's cold) but the one of yours when it's warm sounds nothing like mine (when it's warm.)

In what way is it different. What do you reckon the problem could be?

Dunno it just sounds louder, could be your dephaser pulley but I'm guessing, I have no idea what it sounds like when they go. If it is that (which it might not be) you need to take the cambelt off to get to it so basically you may as well do the belts which is £400.

Wait for someone more knowledgeables opinion first though mate.

Mine sounds a lot alike that but a little quieter. have had it diagnosed by the guys at Rentech that it is indeed my dephaser pulley. Only had my belts done recently, but am getting it done as i do feel that its lost a little power as a result, and idles a bit off aswell

You dont need a whole new cambelt kit, just the belt, which is only about £25

cheers for that mate

I think it may need the belts doing anyway, so might aswell get it all done at the same time. How much will it all cost to get done??

Can I buy the belts cheaper from elsewhere or is it better getting them from renault??

yeah mate, i dont mind meeting up drop me a pm with where abouts you are and we'll try and sort something.

birchdown have a great rep on here see also nw performance for your belts/service etc and they also renault specialists and will be able to tell you whats up.

Do you guys think the car is ok to drive until I get it sorted or will it cause damage to anything else?

Think I'm gonna get in touch with NW performance and get it booked in.

Took it to a garage today near to where I bought it from and the guy there said that it sounds normal for a clio thats done 62,000 miles. I had a little disagreement with him and told him he's talking rubbish.

I can't really afford to get it fixed at the moment. I've done 500 miles since its last service. I think I'm going to wait till I've done at least 3000miles and then take it to NW performance to get it serviced, cam and aux changed as well as a dephaser pulley.

Have quoted me £550 for the Cam, Aux and dephaser.

Anyone got a spare Dephaser Pulley??

The guys talking out his ring end. Sounds spot on for a dephaser issue.

Buy new too. Not worth messing about seen as the next time you'll need to be in that area all being well will be 5 years time of 60 odd extra k's on the clock

Cheers for that mate. Do you think it will be ok to drive it until 65k before getting it done? it's on 62k at the moment.

Having seen a dephaser pulley in pieces I cant see how it would fail and as far as i'm aware none ever have. I drove mine for about 6k but it didn't sound as bad as yours.

I would think it would be ok, just drive it sensibly however i'm sure some will disagree.

From what iv read the experts on here have come to the conclusion that they cant see how it can physically fail. Not sure if they know what the actual noise is tho?

Think sideways danny has oiled a few which have done this with success.

IMO for what it costs probably better replacing the part as it would be a right pain to oil it, lash out the money for a cam / aux change only to find its still making the noise and you have to get the whole lot done again.

Probably ok running it but its your call matey :)

oil pressure operates it, spring closes it when oil pressure is blocked by solenoid. spring goes sloppy, pulley rattles. be fine until you get the belt done

not exactly what i said, just been informed by customers that their engine is quieter after i've washed out the VVT pulley properly during a cambelt change. I dont think for a minute it would cure one that's actually "gone"
