Well, Myself and a friend of mine decided to a road trip. We were inspired by such events as the Gumball 3000 and the Bullrun Rally, with these rallys you pay £30,000 bring a supercar and start driving from 5 star hotel to 5 star hotel. But being students we did have the avaliable funds, so we took a slightly different approach!

Even though we both own perfectly good cars we thought it would be much more fun buying a car just for the trip! Setting a strict budget of £100 or less be set about looking for car, firstly ebay but no joy there. We then phoned around local garages a found what we were looking for! A 1987 Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 GLX for £60, 7 months left on the MOT and 3 months tax. Started perfectly and drove well even had power stearing, a great bargan!

And Here she is.....

We then proceeded to strip out the rear interior to make space for all of our equiptment. As this car only cost us £60 we abused it a little, just for a little bit of fun we added some undercar lighting. We also found £1.20 down the back of the seats so thats a 2% payback!

After all the preperation we set about getting insurance, oh dear this is going to cost alot! Reading carefully throught the small print we found that all insurance companies have a 12 day cooling off period where they have to give you all of your money back! We were going on a trip for 10 days so we took out insurance and then canceled it when we got back and recived a full refund!! FREE INSURANCE FOR 10 DAYS!!

Our route took us from London to Valencia, Spain. We decided to plot a route avioding all toll roads hence saving about 250 Euros. It was fantastic drove for about two or three hours each every day then pitching a camp somewhere and cooking some food on a BBQ. We stopped each morning at supermarkets to bruch our teeth and get food for the day, we always stopped near a river to we could go for a swim and a wash in the evening!

The trip didn't go without some miss-haps and things we really didn't plan for! We overheated only once that was climbing the mountains in spain when it was about 100 degrees....

We where also stopped but drugs customs driving through France on the return leg. This came as a shock, we were escorted off the road by 4 police bikes they then stripped the car bare and the phone ahead and got two dog units to come and have a sniff inside and outside the car, we were laughing so much and this just anoyed the french police even more and obviously they found nothing but this just put the icing on the cake for this trip! Photos were not easy to get because they wanted to take the camera off of us beacuse we were hanging out of the car trying to get some shots!

We got back after our 10 day trip and both agreed it was amazing and plan todo it agin this summer!!

COSTING (between both of us)

Car: £60
Insurance: £0
Petrol: £250
Food: £80
Ferry: £50
The Whole Trip: PRICELESS

Excellent idea mate! Love the insurance idea!

Must have been an excellent trip, im inspired lol!

Well Done!

  Liquid Yellow 182
Fantastic! :) That must have been so much fun, well done for actually doing it mate and not just thinking about it like most of us do!

  HyperAlloy Combat Chassis
Fantastic! Used to drive a proton which was a rebadged 1980s mitsubishi, looked exactly like that and was a 1.5 12v as well. Bullet proof car, was round spain and to france with a caravan and did 90,000 before we sold it never missed a beat. Most reliable car I've driven!

Actually that is a term that is far over used these days 'Lengend' but you really do diserve that title i won't forget this story for a long long time!

good on you - im well impressed - i would have been laughing at the police as well, only problem you could have faced was if somone had used the car for drug running in the past and left something in it! lol!! suppose you did look a bit dodgy driving a car that bad with british plates round foreign countries - would imagine the majority of cars taken abroad are relatively new.
Great story though well done

They do an event like this called scumball I think.

yeah there is the scumball......but we did this off our own backs and planned our own route.....for us this was the best way of doing it! I've heard great things about the scumball....whatever floats your boat at the end of the day.....

cheers

Superb, would love to do this but never have the balls. So you just pulled up and pitched your tent wherever every night? In a field etc? Fair play, looked like great fun.

So hold on... I could just get insurance for 12 days at a time with different companies, and therefore get free insurance year round (providing I don't crash of course)?

That would be an option...but a time consuming one! you need to give good reason to cancel the insureance (it's all in the small print)

whats your reason?.......

we sed we were lied to on the phone by the insureance company and that the policy didn't cover everything we wanted it to....so we want to cancel it

Bugger! An hour a fortnight (ish) isn't much for the £700 saving a year I'd make.

Immense! I just got back, yesterday, from a similar trip around france. 3 years ago me and a mate did 4k over a 2 week 'tour de europa' in his mini one. when the heat wave hit europe: 38 degrees was the norm. This time it was me an 'er in her metro! R reg 114GSi, didn't miss a beat over 2 weeks and 3k!

Couldn't get her insured on the 172. Was gutted.

Crossing with Seafrance was £48, insurance £60. Slept in the car, washed my hair in McDonald's gents sink etc. Even showered in service stations.

Get over there chaps, it's cool as. France has a smaller population than the UK and is x5 the size.

Busy roads...

Oh and beer in McDonalds!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't no claims discount expire after a year or something? Seeing as you won't really have had any insurance for that year, the saving would soon come back to bite wouldnt it?

It's either 2 or 3 years, but if you keep doing the same trick year after year then it wouldn't.

It is pretty unfeasable though, and kinda dumb to use all that effort. Plus there's only so many companies, not sure what they'd do if they got wise to it either.

Absolutely brilliant!! Kinda makes me think, why do I bother wasting all that money on going to Ibiza every year, when fun can be had sooo much more cheaply!

Me and 2 friends did something similar. Bought an MG Montego (V quick in a straight line, hated corners...) for £180 and drove it to Rome and back over a 3 week period. Got some strange looks when we took it round Monaco...

Well that sounded amazing. My 1500 mile trip cost loads more than that £15 for my mate to go on insurance. £120 in fuel and £90 for ferry. 150 euros for entrance and camping at le mans
