Accsessing Router I Don't Have Access To

  1.6 Focus, 1.6 122S
Just moved into a new house, well rented flat really.. no, rented box would be correct. But at least I have a few mates renting in teh same building (uni).

6 of us are wired into a friends (Mr X) router which is connected to the 10meg NTL line.

Now, Mr X is a spoil sport we have this lovely 10meg line but he refuses to forward any ports, not even one in the name of safety!

So, I have to options, find a torrent client that doesnt require port forwarding (no going to happen) or, access the router and open a port.. can I do this?.. Please help.. over PM if you think it will be smarter.

Do you know the name of the router?
Alot of people leave the default password and user name on there router,
So get the Defualt gateway, type it in ur internet browser.> CLICK GO, Some where on the screen will be the name of the router type that in google "+The Model + Default password" and it will come up with some search's about what the default password is.

You could

a) look at your default gateway (Start->Run. cmd. ipconfig) and http://ipofgateway/ and it'd probably work.. then try and login

b) ask your friend politely for access.

c) get your own connection

You should be able to type the IP address of the router, and login that way an change the configuration depending on what router it is... It will most likly ask for a username/password but most likly again he wont of changed them so you will be able to find them out by looking on the internet for a manual for that router or just try..

login: admin || password: pass
or
Login: admin || password: password
or
Login: administrator || password: pass

etc :)

anyway to access the router open up internet explorer.... an in the address bar type

http://192.168.1.1

if this fails to work i guess you will need to find out the ip address of the router

I thought the IP of the Router is the Default gateway ?
Start > Run > Cmd > Type 'ipconfig' And under Default gateway will be the ip you type in the internet explorer address bar

Hold the reset button in on the router for 5-10 secs to reset everything to default. You can then log in using the default password and change any settings. (you may have to set up the internet connection again if you don't have a seperate NTL modem.)

At uni, don't have any money.. therefore no to newsgroups!

this 10 meg connection is £6 per month as its shared between teh 6 of us.. no way could I afford full wack.

It's torture watching my Network runnig at 0.5% when next doors is at 10%... just a sec, how is that if hes on teh same network as me?

  1.6 Focus, 1.6 122S
Well, we all pay for the internet. which we recive through his router.

His router, he decides how its set upi i guess.

hmm, not sure how else to explain it that in the first post!

6 People in seperate rooms in a house. Network cables run from each of the rooms into one room (Mr X) which has the router and cable modem.

We all know each other, have been friends for about 2 years. But Mr X is worried about hackers and evil people getting in so refuses to open any ports on teh router, meaning we can't really utilise the 10meg line.

Mr X can set up the port forwarding for your IP only, therefore, its up to you if you take the risk of hackers!

I dont understand why he doesnt just turn on mac filtering, enter all your mac adresses and bingo. Then only the mac addresses of all the know network adaptors will be able to access?

Exactly the setup i would use, and do back at home.

Alas, he is stuck in his backward ways.

lol, kill him then show im the post, or show him the post then kill him?

Or kill him, show him the post, then kill him to make sure i killed him the first time?

Look for a way to crash the router thus forcing him to re set the thing with the reset button - chances are when its back up the first thing hes gonna set up is not gonna be the user name and password.

Or the long way:

Try Admin or his first name

then maybe as a password - his second name/name with date on the end - pet name, girlfriend name.

Its the only way your gonna get access.

Forgotten or Lost Router Password What do I do after I get online?
Set up your security. By default, routers are in an unsafe configuration. ReadImproving Your Default Security for an explanation, and simple instructions about how to be safer.
 • The router username is always admin
 • The default password is password or (for older routers) 1234
Try the default username and password before resetting the router to the factory defaults.
When a router resets, it goes back to the state when it was new — all information that was entered by hand is lost! Examples are critical things you need to get online, such as ISP username, ISP password, IP addresses, security keys, and ports and services that were opened. It all needs to be re-entered.
So, have your ISP information before resetting the router.
Naturally, if you moved to a new city, or if you bought a used router, the old information in the router may not be of use to you. Contact your ISP if you can't connect any computer directly to the Internet. Then, if there is a connection problem when the router is added, see No Internet Access Through the Router

Reset for most routers with a reset button on the rear panel
Write down configuration information such as IP addresses, security keys, opened ports and services, etc., that you modified. (The default username is admin and the password is either password or 1234. Try these before resetting the router.)
 1. Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks. This takes about 10 seconds. (To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
 2. Release the button.
 3. Wait for the router to reboot.
 4. Log in with the default password. If the router was not cleared, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.
 5. Unplug the router's power.
 6. Press and hold the reset button. While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
 7. Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
 8. Wait for the router to reboot.
 9. Log in with the default password.
For FR314, FR318, and FV318
These routers require reloading the firmware in order to recover from a lost password. Download the most recent firmware from NETGEAR's Web site before proceeding. Follow the instructions in the manual.

For routers with a 9-pin manager port on the rear panel: RT314, RT311, RM356, RT328, RT338, RH340, and RH348
