adjustable strut braces

sorry if this has been covered before but i didn't find anything.

whats always confused me is do you adjust them to push the struts apart or pull them together :S

I think they are usually adjustable to take account of tolerances in both the cars and the braces manufacture. I wouldn't go winding them up so they distort the suspension mounts, the brace would probably break first anyway.
