Advice for a Clio Build.

  172
Hello all.

A friend of mine is really into his 172 cup, He has had it for 5 years and wont be getting rid of it anytime soon, Its his second car and barely does 5000 miles a year. He has recently brought all supporting mods, Brakes, Suspension safety etc for the car but now wants to spend abit of time sorting out making the car abit faster. He has around £4500-£5000 he wants to spend. He doesnt want to go down the turbo route as its more hassle than its worth in our minds. He will be using it 50% road 50% track on average. So the question is what can he get for his money? Were not mechanics by any means but know our way around a engine bay etc. So fitting must be included in this rough costing, This is not a results figure were after we are not after 50000 horse power. We want reliable, safe power to use with the performance.

Thanks. John

This isnt a slagging match. He wants to keep it how it was intended. not changing engines etc.. This isnt a slagging match "get a evo for less" all that. Just a question for options and peoples experiences. We have done alot of searching on the forums and would ideally not want boost. As it gets unrealiable. ITB's with cams is a good option and we are in talks with a engine builder to build a high compression engine to suit. This correct? What ITB's would be best for our experience? And cams to suit? Thanks again.

Pound's per gains, ITB's and camshaft's in my opinion are expensive for essentially little gains, that said, if i were in the position myself - i'd do it lol.

I'd go the charger route with that budget.

If your not doing it yourself take it to a trader on here, and ask for the best set up available within budget, otherwise search through the forum (projects section) there loads here so have a look!

The engines there self are very reliable, but expensive to tune.

Spend all the money on track days and some 1-1 drive coaching (not an hour with an instructor a full day 1-1)

will make him a damn site quicker than bolting things to his car

He Has done driving instructing, This is not purely for the track.

Seems like a massive waste of money to only slightly increase the cars performance. Just leave it as it is and maybe invest in some track tuition.

Although Cams aren't silly money.

Its not to someone who loves there car... Again its only ever used 50% on the track.

It depends what you want from a track car IMO, personally if you want more power and don't want turbo etc then your only option is cams and or ITB's. If doing ITB's then you will have to run standalone ECU and in that case you may aswell fit 421's rather than the 438's.

Can you do mechanical work yourselves or do you need people to do it? If you can do it yourself then I would call Jenvey and get a set of their throttle bodies and they will be able to supply you with the filter, TPS etc. I would personally use a specialist components Typhoon known on this forum more as the TDF EC1. It's a great ECU very simple to wire in and will have all the features and more that you will ever need.

Then get a set of 421's, keep the VVT. Change the dephaser and water pump for piece of mind along with fitting a set of ARP rod bolts and Megane 225 injectors.

You'll probably need an oil cooler for sustained use on track but get a thermostatic sandwich plate if its going to be used on the roads as otherwise you will never get the oil upto temp on the roads.

If you can do it all yourself then I think total cost would be around £3700 including injectors, oil cooler belt kit etc

Check the Traders section on here and speak to people who know these cars inside out. Tell them his budget and what he wants to achieve and I'm sure they will see him right
