Advice needed

I have had my Cup 4 weeks now and already some t**t has scratched the side. The scratch is about as wide as a pin head and about a foot and half long, its quite deep as its gone through to the undercoat. I took it to my local body shop today and he said it looks like im gona have to have the whole panel resprayed. I really dont wana have to have it resprayed.

Has anyone had a similar type scratch just touched up before?

If i get the panel resprayed will it void my paint warrenty?

Do you think its best to get Renault to do the work? (gona be pricey though!)

Please help!

You wont get it to look good enough with a touch up mate. The only options are to either have the whole panel resprayed by a bodyshop - £250 per panel approx.

Or

Chips Away or other mobile companys do it a lot cheaper because they use a technology which allows them to spray only the damage and a bit more of the panel, and blend it in. I think youll find the cost will be about £100 inc, if the tw*t only got one panel, if two panels - probably a fair bit more.

Dont know about how it affects warranty though.

I would go for Chips away. They done a small scratch on my 172 the other month. Dealer paid for it so cant tell you a price. Car was scratched just before I took delivery of it.

Chips Away will also come to your home/workplace as long as its not a big job.

difficult i know but the quality of work varies from one opperator to another so try and see a sample of there work some have had bad press on this forum

mine was fairly deepbut only about 1 - 2cms long. basically they t-cut it. They got most of mine out just a very small mark now. told it would be a case of respraying the complete wing. so I aint bothering now.

Have you tried t-cut might get the majority of it out, but if its gone through to the base coat, prob be a respray job.

Yeah respray, but you wont need to spray the whole panels.

A decent bodyshop will be able to blend it in.

metallic is harder to do, but possible if your good enough!

Bet you wish you could have caught them doing it!

A fecking fox walked across my bonnet at work and has left tiny paw print marks on it! Luck a bit of autoglym made them only better and you can only really see them under a strip light in a garage.

from visual appearance, a good cut and polish will get rid of it, i had the same situation with my 1.2 16v

I seriously doubt it.

Its hard to tell from the pic, but looks like its taken a fair bit of paint off, so no matter how much polish you use, it aint gonna make no difference.

Best bet is to find a really decent bodyshop near you and see what they say.

gotta admit i had 1 on craggys old willy that was about as deep as this

a few coats of touch up and lots n lots of t-cut slight bit of wet n dry then a coat of lacquer got it lookin near enuff mint again.........so not impossible

Since it seems like you may have to pay quite a bit for a respray you might as well try this idea I have used it on the scratchs on my car and its quite cheap

Buy some touch up paint from Renault and then go to modeling shop and buy there finest paint brushes (within reason u dont need something with 1 brissle) You need a thin enough brush which will make a thin layer in the scratch

Then make sure the paint is shake up paint the touch up over the scratch making sure to leave one coat to dry before painting another layer on.

(Keep cleaning the modeling brush to make sure it doesnt dry up)

After you have put a few coats on get some of that scratch removal stuff from Halfords (its about £10 the last time I had to buy it) it looks like a tooth paste tube.

Keep putting the scratch removal stuff on the area

Polish the area well.

That should do a much cheaper job than any spray shop and you wont have used all the stuff you hads to buy so you can use it again.

Soory to hear about the car getting scratched though. The warently should be fien as long as the job is well done Renault give long warenties as modern paint problems are very few and if they do occurs they have so many get out clauses ie wear and tear that they dont pay anyway.

How would Renault know the car panel had been sprayed the only give away would be to carbon date the paint unless the job was porly done.

Many new cars are repairs before the new owners pick them up anyway. The warenty would only be invalid for the part you had sprayed.

The above technique works well with certain touch-up paints, but not all. My first Clio was metallic grey and this technique worked a treat, but the last Valver I had was black (pearlescent) and the paint would be totally removed by the T-cut/scratch remover every time.

If you get a touch up that is pretty thick and dries well it works best, but you cant tell until you apply it!

I have used this on my parents 97 metalic blue E class Merc, my 02 metalic black Clio and my 98 light blue metalic Escort. I belive paint nowadays has to be water based or something and the valver may have been painted with none water based paints which could have has some effect.

no im not taking the piss, i had to have my drivers door repainted and the rear 1/4 panel was polished, it did remove the scratch, which i might add was showing bare metal

most members in the mids will tell you that it was not a small scratch i had, and was possibly done with a screwdriver as opposed to keys

had my cup keyed within two weeks of ownership, cost me 250 cash to have three panels resprayed. The bodyshop done a f**king brilliant job and youd never know anything had been done to it.

unless theyve anything to paint upto then itll be a respray job.

How deep was your stratch?

I might give this a go and if it dont work get it resprayed!

it looks like 2 pannels need respraying! your looking about about £200 from the main dealer and you can not really get them to touch it up cos you will be able to tell. I would just touch it up for now - its gonna get more scratches on it at some point so its better to do it later when it looks more of a mess. Some tw*t did that to my door and put my window through - cost £150 to put right. I got the touch up kit from reno for free and it does look quite good if done right - it will at least take away the noticable white line across it.

Na i only need the one panel sprayed the scratch goes slightly over the fuel cap!

Do Renault give touch up kits away free with new cars then?

Where did you get it from? Just your local dealer?

I got a very nasty key scratch out of the bonnet of my Williams 3 with the Mer scratch and chip repair kit I got from Halfords (about £20). It came with cutting paste, polishing mop and a video showing how to get various paintwork damage out.

The car had also been keyed on the boot as well, and the kit did not get this scratch out as the paint was too thin. The removal process basically requires you to take the laquer down to the level of the scratch and then use the mop (along with an electric drill) to polish the laquer back up to the shine of the rest of the car.

From the looks of your scratch it might be possible. It took a couple of hours hard work, but it came out very well. Ill see if i can find some pics.

yeah from my local dealer. I complained that the paint was too thin - causing to get a chip on my 2 week old clio! so he went and got me an offical kit. Its a very good match. You get the colour stick and laquer stick - mines gone manky for some reason.

Well the scratch on the Escort was down to almost the metal after the garage door fell on the bonnet and it came out reasonable although i didnt put to much effort into it as the car was going a week later for the Clio.

On the Clio I went into a load of brambles and thorns on the side of a country road at some speed road so the whole of the front passenger panel was completely scatched and the drivers door and wing mirror was damaged. I spent almost the whole day then polishing and painting the car and you couldnt tell in the end.

However a few months later I totally smashed the car up into a load of bushes on a country road and the repairers resparayed the panels and you couldnt tell at all they looked better that they did new. I guess with a new car it is easier for them to respray the car so the damage is invisible.

Depends on the severity of the scratch and the depth of the laquer. The scratch above sanded and polished out (some seriously intense polishing though). The one on the boot needed touching up. At few paces it couldnt be seen, but I knew it was there. The laquer was really thin on the boot of the Williams so the same sort of scratch did more damage.

Looking at that pic of yours, you might just be able to sand, polish, touch up the laquer, and then re-sand over the newly applied laquer so its flush with the original coat. Then just polish the area back to full shineyness. Just takes a bit of patience.
